Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance the biggest gainers are Demons in Standard. After performing well at Worlds last weekend, Archfiend of the Dross (showcase) shot up a massive 216% to over $5 while Unholy Annex // Ritual Chamber gained 62% to $11. With Wizards' heavy focus on Standard next year and rotation changes, expect to see more of this in the future, with cards that perform well in major tournaments getting a meaningful price spike.
Meanwhile in Modern, Blade of the Bloodchief more than doubled up this week thanks to its combo with Basking Broodscale becoming the hot new tech in Modern. If you can get a Blade of the Broodscale and have a creature die (or the mana to adapt Basking Broodscale) you'll start an infinite loop with Blade of the Bloodchief putting a counter on Basking Broodscale which will make an Eldrazi Spawn that can be sacrificed for a mana and to trigger Blade of the Bloodchief again to restart the loop. Just how good this combo is remains to be seen. It has been putting up results on Magic Online over the past week, but does it have staying power? Only time will tell. Regardless it's unlikely that the price of Blade of the Bloodchief will go too much higher since it was somewhat recently reprinted in Lost Cavern of Ixalan Commander.
Finally, Burst Lightning is returning to Standard for at least the next five years in Foundations and also entering Pioneer for the first time thanks to the reprinting. As a result, the textless Players Reward promo shot up between 400% and 700% this week to between $5 and $7. We saw the same thing happen recently with Pyroclasm, which was reprinted in Duskmourn only to have the textless promo printing jump from under $3 to over $20, a price it maintains to this day. As a result, Burst Lightning sticking at $5+ seems realistic and if you want to get ahead of the game, picking up textless promos that could possibly be reprinted into Standard could be a viable strategy for the future.
