Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Agent of Treachery Echo of Eons Final Fortune

While Ikoria's release in paper next Friday will probably shake things up, this week our biggest Standard winner is everyone's favorite land destruction spell: Agent of Treachery. While Agent of Treachery has been a fine ramp payoff for most of its life in Standard, Ikoria brought with it multiple new ways of cheating it into play like Winota, Joiner of Forces and Lukka, Coppercoat Outcast, pushing Agent of Treachery's price all the way up to $10 while making the seven-drop the third most-played creature in Standard. If you have copies you aren't using, I'd be looking to sell or trade them as quickly as possible. Agent of Treachery rotates in the fall and doesn't see any non-Standard play outside of Commander, making it a good candidate to drop significantly at rotation, and even more so once it is eventually reprinted in a Commander-focused product.

Meanwhile in older formats, Echo of Eons doubled in price this week from around $7 to nearly $14 on the back of increased Legacy play. We've reached the point in Modern Horizon's life cycle where we are about a year post-release, which is the time when supply tends to dry up and cards start increasing in price. In fact, the entire Modern Horizons set, after slowly dropping in price for the past year, has increased in value about 20% over the past month. If you still need cards from the set to play Modern, Commander, or Legacy, this is a good window to pick them up.

Finally we have a Commander-focused buyout to talk about: all versions of Final Fortune were bought out this week, with prices going from around $2 up to $8 before settling between $5 and $6 (with the Mirage edition commanding a premium at $10). I couldn't find any reason for this buyout. To the best of my knowledge, it wasn't featured in any content and it doesn't work especially well with any of the new legends from Commander 2020 or Ikoria. My guess is it's a random speculative buyout, with someone(s) betting that the cheap extra turn effect is under-priced at $2 and/or will be broken and in demand at some point in the future (unlike today where it sees play in 1% of Commander decks according to EDHRec).
