Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The big finance news this week revolves around Commander 2018 spoilers. While the set itself is getting a lukewarm reception thanks to some mediocre reprints, it has caused a handful of buyouts. The Gitrog Monster dodged reprinting in the Jund "Lands" deck and increased 159% to about $10, while Enchanted Evening is now over $20 after jumping 238% as a potential upgrade for the Bant Enchantment deck. The Chain Veil is up 27% to $23 thanks to its combo potential with Estrid, the Masked.
As for the Commander 2018 decks themselves, the new cards look super sweet, but apart from Bear Umbra and Enchantress's Presence in the Bant deck, there really aren't many good reprints. In fact, if you look at the average number of reprints worth at least $3 or more per deck, you'll see that Commander 2016 had 8.4 and Commander 2017 had 6.4, while Commander 2018 only has an average of 4 per deck. So if you're buying the decks, you're doing it for the spicy new cards, not for a meaningful number of good reprints.
Finally, in Standard, Tibalt, probably better know as Sarkhan, Fireblood, is on the upswing. Apart from Dragon decks posting some results in Standard, the three-mana planeswalker managed to take first in last week's SCG Modern Classic in Skred Dragons. While the number of decks that can use Sarkhan, Fireblood is limited, it seems like the Tibalt comparison is proving unfair. The end result is a 54% increase to $20. Keep an eye out at the Pro Tour this coming week: if Sarkhan, Fireblood posts good finishes in Standard or Modern, it could continue to rise.
