Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The biggest finance news this week is the full Rivals of Ixalan spoilers which came out Friday. Right now the set is in a weird place, with a ton of mythics bunched up in the $8 to $12 range. Over the coming weeks it seems likely that two or three of these mythics will rise to the top and shoot up to $15 or $20, while a bunch tumble down towards $5. While a banning for energy (which could happen on January 15th) could lead to some big spikes, this process will likely be slower and than normal with Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan being Modern rather than Standard.
Rivals of Ixalan is having some impact on older cards as well, with the clearest example being Lotus Vale. With a Blood Sun on the battlefield, the land doesn't have a downside and taps for three mana, which is extremely powerful. Whether or not there is real potential for a Legacy combo deck featuring these cards is murky, but since Lotus Vale is on the Reserved List, there is little downside in buying it out now and figuring it out later. The most likely outcome is that Lotus Vale trends down over the next couple of months, but probably never goes all the way back down to $12.
In Pauper, which had its first official Grand Prix side events this weekend, the big story is Ash Barrens. The common land from Commander 2016 has tripled in price from $3 to $9 in the past week. The reason for this is twofold. First, Ash Barrens is one of the best dual lands in Pauper for thee color decks (and the most played nonbasic land in the format). Second, even though Ash Barrens is technically a common, all the cards in Commander decks are really the same rarity since you get one of each per deck. The price might tick down a little over the coming months, but if you need copies to play Commander today, you will probably need to bite the bullet and pay the new higher price (or shop around for Commander 2016 decks to get your copies).
