Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Elenda, the Dusk Rose Intruder Alarm Thornbite Staff

This week most of the big finance news ties into Ravnica Allegiance and the official start of spoiler season for the set. As for the set itself, don't believe the pre-sale hype. Right now with eight mythics spoiled the average price of a mythic is $14.75, which is far too high (the average is something like $7.50 on prerelease weekend). If you need some of these cards to play on release weekend and don't care about losing a bit of value, preordering is fine, but in general the best finance move is to wait at least a couple of weeks for the market to settle and the hype to die down.

More importantly, Ravnica Allegiance is having a big impact on cards already in print. As far as Standard is concerned Elenda, the Dusk Rose is the biggest winner, more than doubling in price to $17 on the back of Teysa Karlov and other Orzhov "dies" synergies, with Divine Visitation (up 22% to about $8) ticking up as well for the same reasons. Here, the important thing to remember is for these prices to stick the cards will have to post results. With Elenda, the Dusk Rose rotating this coming fall, this will likely be her peak. If you have copies it might be best to move them now.

Meanwhile, the Commander (and possibly Modern) world is excited for Prime Speaker Vannifar and her potential to facilitate some infinite combos. Intruder Alarm jumped more than 200% to $25 as the easiest way to go infinite with the new creature-based Birthing Pod by untapping Prime Speaker Vannifar every time a creature enters the battlefield. The uncommon Thornbite Staff increased 147% to over $8 as another way to repeatedly untap Prime Speaker Vannifar. I'd be surprise if the Intruder Alarm price doesn't stick; for a unique effect that hasn't been reprinted in a decade its previous $8 price tag seems too low, especially when you consider that decks that want Intruder Alarm almost always want it as a four-of.
