Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest winner was Blinkmoth Infusion with the Darksteel rare shooting up 157% to over $10. Blinkmoth Infusion is a really unique card: While untapping all of your artifacts can be valuable in the right deck, in general, Blinkmoth Infusion only sees play in decks that care about its massive mana cost. This gives the card commander demand for decks like Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow which is mostly hoping to flip it off of the top of the deck to drain everyone for 14. The biggest reason for the recent price movement is that Blinkmoth Infusion has developed into an unlikely Modern staple for Calibrated Blast decks, which are looking to flip into Blinkmoth Infusion with Calibrated Blast to dome the opponent for 14. There are only three cards in Modern with mana value 14 or higher - Calibrated Blast, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and Blinkmoth Infusion - which means you pretty much have to play Blinkmoth Infusion if you want to play Calibrated Blast optimally. While Blinkmoth Infusion should trend down post-buyout as an old one-print rare, its days of floating around the bulk level seem over.
Last week we talked about Hunted Horror seeing a big price jump thanks to Toxrill, the Corrosive (showcase). This week it's Hunted Phantasm doubling in price to just over $6. Giving your opponent a bunch of 1/1 tokens is exactly what a Toxrill Commander deck wants since Toxrill, the Corrosive (showcase) will kill them all and turn them into Slugs during the next end step. In fact, Hunted Phantasm seems a lot better in Toxrill than Hunted Horror. Its only printing is from original Ravnica a decade ago and has a little bit of fringe Modern potential alongside its Commander demand. Plus, Hunted Horror hasn't dropped much from it's peak, still sitting at $16.50 a week after the buyout. All things considered, Hunted Phantasm seems like it probably still has room to grow.
Last but not least we have Ingenious Smith climbing to $2.69. Just a few weeks ago the Adventures in the Forgotten Realm uncommon was floating around in bulk bins. It wasn't that long ago that almost all uncommons were worthless, but in the era of FIRE design this is no longer the case. If you end up cracking some booster packs or boxes, make sure to pull out the playable uncommons. There's a decent chance that they'll end up being worth a dollar or two, which might not sound like much, but when it comes to squeezing value out of sealed product, every little bit helps.
