The big financial news this week is the release of Commander 2017 and the seemingly endless Reserve List buyouts.
I won't go too deep into the Reserve List buyouts because I just published an entire article on the topic. The TLDR is that essentially every rare Reserve List card from Arabian Nights to Legends has either been bought out, or will likely be bought out in the coming weeks. Rather than betting that certain cards are under priced, people are betting that all the early Reserve List cards are under priced thanks to the amazingly low supply of these sets. This leads to crazy things like $120 Pyramids and $40 copies of Cleansing. If there's a card you really want (or might in the future) that hasn't spiked yet, pick it up as soon as possible, otherwise the best thing to do is just wait out the insanity and see where the market settles before buying any of these cards.
As far as Commander, the biggest winner was Wanderwine Prophets, which jumped a massive 1500% to $17 as a one card infinite turns combo with Inalla, Archmage Ritualist. Meanwhile, Dragonlord Dromoka (up 152% to over $21) is a great upgrade for a Five-Color Dragons deck (especially in a counter-heavy meta), and Bloodline Keeper (up 26% to over $10) gives Vampires another powerful lord. Historically, Commander buyouts don't decrease in price nearly as fast or as much as supply-based Reserve List buyouts because there is real demand for the cards. While it's possible that some of these cards creep down a bit over the coming weeks, if you need a copy to upgrade your Commander 2017 deck, expect to pay more than you would have last week. There's a lot of organic demand from players upgrading their new precons to keep prices high.
