Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The biggest finance news this week is the impact of Iconic Masters on card prices. Most of the cards in the set are down, backed by the fact that the product seems to be in high supply with some vendors selling boxes for as little as $150, and big box stores selling boosters. If you are thinking of buying singles from the set to fill our your collection, I'd wait few weeks. A month or two after set release is usually when most cards from a Masters set start to hit their floors, which means most cards from Iconic Masters will likely fall further in the coming weeks.
The other hot finance topic this week is Unstable, but right now we have more questions than answers about the financial future of the set. Currently, there's only a single card over $5 (Urza, Academy Headmaster) and nearly all of the cards in the set—including mythics—can be preordered for under $2. If Unset Constructed takes off, or a lot of playgroups allow Unstable card for casual play, it's possible these prices end up increasing. Personally I'm just ignoring Unstable from a financial perspective knowing that I could be missing out on some good buys.
In Legacy, the buyout of the week was Arena of the Ancients, which jumped more than 500% to nearly $50. Interestingly, the artifact isn't on the Reserved List, which means it theoretically can be reprinted at any time (although in practice it seems unlikely). The big take away here is if you need obscure old cards, you should probably buy them before they spike even if they aren't on the Reserved List. The supply of sets before The Dark is low enough that all cards from this era are easy buyout targets.
