Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the big news is the multiverse adjusting to the release of Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The biggest winner in Standard this week was Vodalian Hexcatcher (prerelease) with the Merfolk lord shooting up 48% to just under $3. While we haven't seen Merfolk take off yet in new Standard, cards like Tishana's Tidebinder (borderless), Deeproot Pilgrimage, and even Sentinel of the Nameless City have revitalized the archetype in Modern and Pioneer, with Vodalian Hexcatcher (prerelease) being a key piece of the deck in both formats. If Merfolk reemerges as a top tier archetype in either format, Vodalian Hexcatcher (prerelease) could keep creeping up, but at this point it remains to be see if the fish are actually good or if people are just experimenting with new cards.
Keep an eye on Discontinuity. This week the Core Set 2021 mythic gained 23% to just over $6, although this might just be the start. As a one-print mythic from a somewhat unpopular set, the supply of Discontinuity isn't especially high for a recent card and the card is now seeing play in two different tier Pioneer decks in Hidden Strings combo and UW Lotus Field control. The effect - essentially being a split card of a two-mana Stifle and a six-mana extra turn spell - is fairly unique and could find additional homes in the future. It seems like the sort of card that eventually top 8's a Pro Tour and spikes up to $20. If you think you might need copies, it's probably not a horrible idea to snag them now. It's hard to see the price dropping much until it is eventually reprinted and there's a chance it ends up fairly expensive if it ever breaks out on the big stage.
Last week we discussed how Dinosaurs were on the rise thanks to heavy support in Lost Caverns of Ixalan and their popularity in Commander. Well this week it's Vampires turn with Bloodline Keeper ticking up 18% to $16 and Captivating Vampire 20% to $9. We see this every set - commander precons release and older cards that support their theme shoot up in price as players build around the new legends and upgrade their precons - but just how actionable this information is, I'm not sure. While neither card was reprinted in Lost Caverns of Ixalan, they could have been like Elenda, the Dusk Rose or Twilight Prophet were, which dropped the price on both significantly. If you can somehow guess right and buy the cards that aren't reprinted, you'll save a bunch of money. But if you guess wrong the opposite is just as true. At this point if you are thinking of building around any of themes from the Lost Caverns of Ixalan commander precons - Vampires, Merfolk, Dinosaurs or Pirates - you might as well snag the cards soon before prices increase more, or plan on waiting a few months for the hype (and prices) to die down.
