Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest gainer is a weird one: Gustha's Scepter. The Reserved List rare lets you exile cards from your hand and then eventually return them to your hand, which potentially gives it a home in Flubs, the Fool (buy-a-box) Commander decks. The card shot up from $2 to $13, although this seems to be a targeted buyout, so it's hard to know how much real demand there is. TCGplayer shows a few copies sold at $7 or $8 post-buyout, but most of the purchases came pre-spike when the card was still just a few dollars. As a Reserved List card it is unlikely to fall back down to its pre-buyout price in the near future, although considering Gustha's Scepter really only goes in one deck, my guess is the hype will be short-lived.
Meanwhile in Modern, Goryo's Vengeance is on the rise with the Kamigawa printing gaining 51% this week to $35.50. Lost in the dominance of Modern Horizons 3 and Nadu, the Esper Vengeance is still a very strong Modern deck and might be positioned to be near the top of the format once we finally get some bannings on August 26. If you need copies, you'll save about $10 each if you look for the Ultimate Masters printing.
Finally, Bristly Bill, Spine Sower is still on the rise. While it only gained another 7% this week, all in all it has increased from under $10 during Outlaws of Thunder Junction spoiler season to $27 today, making it - by a significant margin - the most expensive card from OTJ. The problem is that nearly all of the non-Commander demand for Bristly Bill, Spine Sower comes from various Nadu decks, and the odds of Nadu being banned in a few weeks is incredibly high. If you have copies you aren't using, I'd sell them quick. It's hard to see how the two-drop can maintain anywhere near its current price once the Nadu demand inevitable dries up.
