Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance the multiverse is still adjusting to Modern Horizons 3. The biggest gainer this week was Ob Nixilis, the Adversary, which gained 179% to $11.50. After being super hyped when it was first spoiled in Street of New Capenna, the sacrifice outlet planeswalker mostly fell flat. It turns out that Ajani, Nacatl Pariah curves really well into Ob Nixilis since you can sacrifice the Cat token it makes to not only copy Ob Nixilis, the Adversary, but also flip Ajani, Nacatl Pariah. Considering that Ob Nixilis is now three years old and has yet to be reprinted, the planeswalker could continue to rise assuming it sticks in Modern.
Speaking of Modern Horizons 3, Ocelot Pride is the new hotness from the set. The one-drop gained 145% this week to $54 as it continues to increase in play in everything from Energy decks to Domain Zoo and even some Scam builds. The scary part is that Ocelot Pride is still just scratching the surface of its potential, currently in about 7% of Modern decks. The best comparison here might be Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, which was in more than 30% of Modern decks after Modern Horizons 2 released and settled at around $80 before being reprinted. If Ocelot Pride's play rate continues to rise as people realize its power, trending up towards $80 isn't out of the question.
Finally, Spell Snare doubled up in price this week to between $5 and $10 depending on the printing (the cheapest version is currently The List reprinting, although there are very few The List copies on the market). The one mana counter for two-drops had fallen out of favor in Modern in recent years after being a staple a decade ago, but currently 40% of the top ten creatures in Modern are two-drops as cards like Drannith Magistrate (planeswalker stamp), Orcish Bowmasters, Amped Raptor, and Ajani, Nacatl Pariah see heavy play. Toss in answering Counterspell (borderless), Dress Down (showcase) and other popular non-creature spells, and Spell Snare is back, currently in the top 25 of the most-played noncreatures in the Modern format. The card is super easy to reprint, so this spike will likely be short lived, but for now Spell Snare is more than worth pulling from your bulk.
