Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest news comes from the Commander ban list update. Two cards were unbanned, and both saw massive price spikes. Lutri, the Spellchaser was unbanned (although it remains banned as a companion), causing it to shoot up more than 1,000% to $6, while Biorhythm was also unbanned and tripled to $40.
Of course, a number of Commander cards that people thought might get unbanned spiked as well—even though they ultimately remained banned. Primeval Titan climbed around 150% to $24, Dockside Extortionist (borderless) doubled to $45, Prophet of Kruphix jumped 2.5x to $8, and Iona, Shield of Emeria (which Wizards specifically mentioned in their article as a card they were considering unbanning) gained 173% to $15. Many of these prices have already fallen from their peaks once it became clear the cards weren’t coming off the ban list.
The important lesson here is that speculating on ban list updates is risky. If you picked correctly and only bought Lutri, the Spellchaser and Biorhythm, you came out ahead—but if you bought other cards as well, it was likely a losing endeavor.
Finally, we’re still seeing Lorwyn Eclipsed influence the Commander market. Gilt-Leaf Palace more than doubled to $15 as a key land for GB Elves decks. Considering that the two most popular legends from the main set are Maralen, Fae Ascendant and High Perfect Morcant—both of which want Gilt-Leaf Palace—this price jump shouldn’t be a surprise. Add in the fact that a near-term reprint seems unlikely (since Lorwyn Eclipsed would have been the perfect place to reprint the tribal land cycle), and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gilt-Leaf Palace remain relatively expensive going forward.
