Weekly Update (Mar 08): The Sneakiest Mill Deck Ever

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is mostly about some super old cards. The biggest gainer was Firestorm, which shot up nearly 200% to $55, although I'm not exactly sure why. The card doesn't seem to be showing up much in Premodern and it doesn't work with any hot new Commanders. This might just be a Reserved List buyout, with someone hoping that the card will eventually be in demand and, thanks to the Reserved List hard-capping supply, could snowball in price. As far as I can tell there’s no catalyst for the current massive increase, which makes me think it's more likely to drop than continue to climb in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile Living Wish (which increased nearly 100% to $12) and Haunting Echoes (the Odyssey printing up more than 100% to $17) both jumped this week, but this time there's a clear reason: Premodern. There's a version of The Rock running around in the format that plays Living Wish to tutor a bunch of silver-bullet creatures from the sideboard and another that is playing Haunting Echoes in the main deck. The good news is that both cards have cheaper printings available that are still perfectly legal in the format, with the Core Set 2011 version of Haunting Echoes sitting at under $0.50 and the Masters 25 printing of Living Wish just over $1.
Finally, in Standard The Ooze is the biggest early winner from TMNT, with the artifact increasing more than 100% this week to $9. My early impression of the card is that it's actually way better than people think and that Mutagen tokens are oddly synergistic and might actually be pretty powerful. That said, $10 is a lot for a Standard-legal rare. If we look at Spider-Man, perhaps the closest comparison for TMNT, there are zero non-land rares in the set that cost more than $6 (Multiversal Passage (borderless) is the most expensive at just under $15) and a total of three non-land rares worth more than $2. Unless Mutagen really takes off in Standard or becomes an incredibly popular Commander archetype, my guess is The Ooze will start trending down soon, even if it is a bit of a sleeper.
