Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance the biggest winner - by far - was Atraxa, Grand Unifier. The Phyrexia: All Will Be One mythic shot up from around $10, briefly touched $60, before dropping to around $45. So why did Atraxa go from average mythic to one of the most expensive cards in #MTGONE? Players have more or less decided that Atraxa, Grand Unifier is the second coming of Griselbrand (Read the Fine Print) and as a result the seven-drop is showing up across formats in decks that can cheat it into play. The last week for Atraxa has been pretty absurd. Along with being the second most popular commander from Phyrexia, it won both Standard challenges on Magic Online (in two different decks) as well as showed up in Modern Creativity, Legacy Reanimator, and even Vintage Oath of Druids. We've seen crossover cards that are extremely popular in Commander and in 60 card formats maintain some extremely high prices lately (see: The Great Henge (planeswalker stamp) and The Meathook Massacre), and as a result it wouldn't be a surprise to see Atraxa, Grand Unifier remain one of the most expensive cards from Phyrexia: All Will Be One.
Meanwhile in Commander, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is on the rise, increasing 58% this week to nearly $44. Thanks to all of the new toxic cards in Phyrexia: All Will Be One, poisoning the table became much more realistic in Commander, and even though Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is technically an infect card rather than a toxic threat, it's still one of the best ways to poison out an opponent, so players are snagging copies to play in Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa. Just how much staying power poison has in Commander remains to be seen - sometimes new mechanics are fads that see a lot of play when a set releases and then quickly fade - but considering Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon has only been reprinted once, supply isn't super high. Expect it to remain expensive until it is eventually reprinted again.
Speaking of poison in Commander, proliferate cards are also on the rise, lead by Sword of Truth and Justice (retro) which gained 48% this week, climbing to $38, although cards like Viral Drake, Contagion Engine, and Inexorable Tide all saw a jump this week as well. In Commander it's fairly hard to deal 10 poison counters to three opponents using toxic or infect creatures, but getting a few counters on opponents and then proliferating them a bunch of times is much more realistic, which explains the sudden interest in old proliferate cards. Expect the prices of these cards to normalize a bit as the hype for Phyrexia: All Will Be One dies down, but in the short term you'll have to pay a premium.
