Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week, the biggest finance news is mostly speculative: we got a teaser trailer for War of the Spark that suggests the set is going to have a heavy theme of planeswalkers. Normally when a set has a popular casual theme, a lot of older cards that work with the theme spike during spoiler season. If you want to be ahead of the curve, the time to pick up your planeswalkers-matter cards is now. Cards like The Chain Veil, Doubling Season, and Contagion Engine are near the top of the list, along with various Oaths (Oath of Ajani, Oath of Teferi, and Oath of Gideon especially), Call the Gatewatch, Deploy the Gatewatch, and pretty much anything else that synergises with planeswalkers or legends. While it's possible the speculation is wrong, considering that many of these cards are quite cheap at the moment, if you think you might need them in the future the safest bet is to grab them now in case they spike once #MTGWAR spoilers start in a little over a month.
In Modern, the biggest winner was Semblance Anvil which jumped 330% to over $11. The reason for the spike? A new build of Eggs using Semblance Anvil to replace the now-banned Krark-Clan Ironworks managed to 5-0 on Magic Online this week. While it's possible the deck is real, it's too early to say for sure. If you have copies laying around it's probably best to sell or trade them away while the price is high—it should settle back down in the $5 range once the initial hype dies down unless the deck starts posting paper results.
Finally, Pteramander is on the rise after posting results across formats over the past couple of weeks. The uncommon was as low as $0.50 right after Ravnica Allegiance released and is now up to $2.50. If the Legacy and Modern results continue to pile up, it's possible that Pteramander climbs even higher and ends up being the Fatal Push of the set.
