Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Village Messenger Stone Calendar Mana Vortex

This week, the biggest finance news is the aftermath of Pro Tour Hour of Devastation. Among the 10 biggest winners in Standard, seven are cards from the Ramunap Red deck that put six players into the top eight. The big question is how good the deck will be now that it has a target on it. Unless you plan on playing the deck heavily over the next couple months, it might be wise to sell it now and rebuy later after rotation if you want to play the deck. This is doubly true of rotating cards like Village Messenger (current $1.50 as an uncommon) and Falkenrath Gorger (currently $2.49). Cards almost always decrease in price after a Pro Tour spike, even if the deck remains near the top of the format.

In older formats, the trend of the week is Reserved List buyouts. While this probably isn't newsworthy in and of itself, the fact that people are now buying out cards from The Dark (one of the comparatively high supply old sets) is interesting. The two big ones this week were Stone Calendar (up nearly 1500% to $42.50) and Mana Vortex (up 336% to about $28). This shift away from low-supply sets like Arabian Nights and Legends towards high supply sets like The Dark means it probably isn't a bad idea to pick up any Commander or casual cards you need from any early sets now, because you never know what will spike tomorrow.

Finally, looking to the future, this week will feature Commander 2017 previews. We know the tribes are Cats, Vampires, Dragons, and Wizards, so keep a close eye on older cards of these creature types (or tribal matters cards in general). It would be surprising if we didn't see some big spikes this week of random, casual cards. If you plan on building around any of these tribes (or upgrading Commander 2017 decks), you'll save yourself some money by buying early rather than waiting until after the inevitable buyouts and price increases.
