Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week the world of Magic finance was mostly quiet. The biggest winner was Dress Down (showcase), with the Modern Horizons 2 rare jumping 149% to $5 based on increased play in both Legacy and Modern. The temporary enchantment has mostly been used offensively, doing things like keep an Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath or Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger (planeswalker stamp) around permanently by making them lose their "sacrifice" clause or growing Death's Shadow, although one of the upsides of Dress Down (showcase) is that you can occasionally get your opponent by making their creatures lose all abilities. Most importantly, since the enchantment cantrips when it enters the battlefield, the floor is high. At its worse you can cycle Dress Down (showcase) away for two mana. Despite the upside, it's hard to see Dress Down (showcase) increasing much more, especially in the short term considering that some of the most hyped and played rares from Modern Horizons 2 like Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth and Ignoble Hierarch (showcase) are only around $10 at the moment. Long term, like most Modern Horizons 2 card that see play, it has potentially to keep climbing as we move further away from the sets release and supply starts to dwindle.
Meanwhile, as we near Standard's rotation, it might be time to take the plunge and pick up some rotating cards you need for Commander or eternal formats. One good example are the Triomes which have been slowly but consistently increasing in price. The cycle are ultra-staples in Commander and see a reasonable amount of play back to Modern. They have the look of a land cycle that could easily and up $20 or $30 in a couple of years if they aren't reprinted. If you haven't picked up the copies you need yet, doing it now as some Standard-only players might be dumping their copies make sense, it's hard to see them trending down in the near future.
Finally, we still see Modern Horizons 2 having an impact on Modern prices. Right after the set released we saw a lot of old cards that support new Modern Horizons 2 all stars increasing in price. Now we're seeing the reaction to the new meta as some of the key answers to new Modern Horizons 2 decks are shooting up. This week the biggest was Engineered Explosives, which is one of the better answers to the all one-drop Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer or Dragon's Rage Channeler aggro decks while also being one of the cleanest and cheapest ways to sweep away a board of Urza's Saga constructed. The original Fifth Dawn printing is currently after pushing $60 after being $10 just a few months ago, but thankfully you can still snag any of the three Masters set printings for around $20. As more and more decks add Engineered Explosives to their sideboards, the price could continue to creeping up. If you don't have them an expect to be playing paper Modern in the near future it's probably wise to snag your copies sooner rather than later.
