Weekly Update (Apr 05): Ikoria and Commander 2020 Previews

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Previews

Double preview season is here, with both Ikoria and Commander 2020 cards coming out this week. For Ikoria, Godzilla makes an appearance as Wizards teams up with Toho to bring the kaijus to the multiverse. The promos will be available in Collectors Boosters (and as the Buy-A-Box promo), but regularly named Magic-themed versions of the cards will appear in regular boosters. We also learned of the new set mechanics: mutate, ability counters, and companion. In Commander news, we received the five face-commanders, also the news that each deck will come with a new Partner pairing. Full decklists for Commander 2020 will be coming Monday.

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Storm Herald Solemnity Unbound Flourishing

This week, all of the biggest finance news is tied to the release of Ikoria and Commander 2020. In Standard, Storm Herald is the biggest winner, jumping 70% to $0.85 based on the spoiling of the biggest aura in Magic: Colossification. While the combo of Storm Herald and Colossification needs a third card since Colossification taps the creature it enchants when it comes into play, something like Fling or Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner offer a way to one-shot an opponent pretty early in the game.

Meanwhile in Pioneer, Solemnity increased a massive 341% to $7 thanks to Luminous Broodmoth. With a Solemnity on the battlefield, Luminous Broodmoth returns any of your other non-flying creatures to the battlefield when they die since Solemnity keeps the flying counter from being added. This not only offers removal protection, but allows for sacrifice-based combos where you can use something like Woe Strider to continually sacrifice a creature and drain the opponent out of the game with Zulaport Cutthroat or some other death-trigger-based payoff.

Finally in the world of Commander, Unbound Flourishing shot up 61% to $8 thanks to our new x-spell legend Zaxara, the Exemplary. In a Zaxara deck, Unbound Flourishing not only makes x-spells bigger, but also makes the tokens that Zaxara, the Exemplary makes twice as big. Expect to see more increases as spoiler week rolls along, especially as new Commander build-arounds are identified.

While the Magic market is still struggling through the pandemic, these price increases show that people are still buying cards, at least to some extent, which is a bit of encouraging news in an otherwise uncertain time.
