Historic 101: Historic Wheels

Awhile back I had played a best of one version of a wheels deck. It was also in Esper colors. Naturally, I wanted to go Esper again and add Yorion, Sky Nomad to make deckbuilding a bit easier but then I realized that 60 cards is just better for this deck as we really want to have Narset, Parter of Veils and our favorite meme card, Induced Amnesia early! People wanted to see a best of three version of this deck so I dropped black and went with a traditional Azorius Control gameplan backed by wheel shenanigans.

Gameplan

As you know, we're playing the classic Azorius Control gameplan of counterspells and board wipes

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

We're using these disruptive spells to stall and clear the board for our planeswalkers like Teferi, Time Raveler and Teferi, Hero of Dominaria. By being in Azorius we definitely have some strengths like consistent mana but we lose out on the raw power and spot removal from adding a third color like black or red. In its place, we added two copies of Settle the Wreckage and made sure that Gruul Spellbreaker is always on our radar.

Outside of the stall and survive gameplan, we have our centerpiece planeswalker (surprisingly, it's not Teferi!)

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Narset, Parter of Veils is what helps this deck work as we want to reliably find her early and get her down on a clear board as our win conditions are our wheels!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

Most people will ignore Narset once she's down to a single loyalty counter and we're definitely looking to take advantage of that as Induced Amnesia will strip them of their hand and leave them with exactly one card. Most people are playing effects that bounce or exile meaning that Amnesia never hits the graveyard. This means we can bounce Amnesia back to our hand with Teferi, Time Raveler to ensure our opponents never get their cards back. This also can serve as a way to get a new hand as we can target ourselves when our hand is a real stinker and we're looking for the right half of our deck. We also have a singleton copy of Emergency Powers as a way to reload our deck in the event we're running low in cards. With it being instant speed, we ideally fire this off in our opponent's draw steps with a Narset on board. Though the card is powerful, it being seven mana is a bit too pricey so I only have a singleton copy in the deck.

Conclusion

** VIDEO SPOILERZZZZZ **

The deck fought it's way to a 5-0. We definitely got a good amount of Induced Amnesia action and the card is a lot of fun. By no means is the card a tier one card but its great for laughs and catching people off guard who don't respect Narset, Parter of Veils. If you want to play an optimal Azorius Control list I'm sure there are a ton circulating out there but if you wanted to keep up with the wheel shenanigans, maybe a fourth copy of Induced Amnesia is warranted. I'd also like to add more Shark Typhoon and Omen of the Sea but the list is tight. Turns out playing 80 card Yorion decks have made me comfortable with not having to make decklist cuts! Other than that, the sideboard might want another copy of Aether Gust as Azorius really lacks efficient removal.

Anywho, let me know if you've been working on a wheel list yourself! Thanks for watching and I'll see you at the next one.
