Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is mostly about Avatar, and more specifically the earthbend mechanic, which lets you turn your lands into creatures as highlighted by Toph, the First Metalbender—despite the fact that the set doesn't release until November 21. The biggest gainer was Terra Eternal, which jumped nearly 1000% to $10 as a way to make lands indestructible. While this might seem counterintuitive—since a big part of the power of earthbend is that it gives you the land back if it dies or goes to exile—in a Toph deck specifically, Terra Eternal makes all of your artifacts indestructible for just three mana (assuming you have Toph, the First Metalbender out). That’s a pretty absurd deal considering that Darksteel Forge costs a massive nine mana.
Speaking of land shenanigans, the Odyssey rare Need for Speed shot up almost 200% to $10. The enchantment is already seeing play with some of the land sacrifice commanders from Edge of Eternities like Hearthhull, the Worldseed (borderless) and Szarel, Genesis Shepherd (borderless). It also works really well with Toph, the First Metalbender and earthbend, since you can sacrifice lands (or with Toph, also artifacts, which will be lands) only for earthbend to return them to the battlefield anyway—potentially making it a combo piece with cards like Ugin's Nexus. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Need for Speed was printed way back in 2001 and hasn’t been reprinted since.
Finally, in 60-card formats, Quantum Riddler has separated itself from the Edge of Eternities mythic pack by taking off in various Ephemerate decks in Modern. While the warp mythic did increase 7% in paper this week to $25, on Magic Online it’s currently $60. The bad news is that Quantum Riddler doesn’t see meaningful Commander play, which limits its upside—but it should still maintain a decent amount of value based on Modern and Standard play alone.
