Weekly Update (Sept 9): Guild Kit Basic Lands
Guilds of Ravnica Spoilers |
This week we got a trickle of Guilds of Ravnica information, including the return of Guild Gates, Split Cards and Hybrid Mana. Perhaps the most exciting news is the new basic lands being featured in the Ravnica Guild Kits and their premium foil counterparts available as part of Ravnica Weekend (November 9-11). Check out the Guilds of Ravnica spoilers at mtg.fish/grn, and check out the important highlights of the set from SaffronOlive:

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
This week the finance world has been gearing up for the release of Guilds of Ravnica and a new Standard format. It seems like control is an early favorite to be a top deck post rotation with Teferi, Hero of (em>Dominaria</em) (up 6% to $49) and Search for Azcanta (up 12% to $20.83) both rising on the week. While both cards are powerful, they also seem to interact well with some of the cards and mechanics coming in Guilds of Ravnica like Surveil. As spoilers roll out over the next couple of weeks, expect to see more Standard movement as people make their predictions on what will be good after rotation.
Speaking of getting cheap cards for post-rotation Standard, right now you can redeem a complete set of Core Set 2019 from Magic Online for $93 and a complete set of Dominaria of $125 with fees and shipping included (for US residents). When you consider that just Teferi, Hero of (em>Dominaria</em) and Karn, Scion of Urza retail for more than $80 and the top seven mythics from Core Set 2019 add up to more than $100 in value by themselves, at current prices redemption seems like a very efficient way to get the Standard cards you need.
Finally, as far as Guilds of Ravnica itself, in general it's best to avoid pre-orders. While occasionally a card is under-priced, more often than not you'll save money by waiting until after the set is out for a couple of months before buying. This is especially true of the shocklands, which should end up close to $5 by this winter. Pick up what you need to play Standard immediately and wait on the rest.
