Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Doubling Season Liliana of the Veil Atraxa, Praetors' Voice

In Modern, the biggest winners this week include Scrying Sheets and Koth of the Hammer, both of which rose to prominence as important parts of Skred Red, and now both near $20. Unless the deck starts putting up results, I wouldn't be surprised to see both start ticking back down before long. Perhaps more interesting, Doubling Season is on the rise, which seems to happen every year just after the release of the Commander decks. We're getting to the point where it will need to be reprinted again, and it could be a great money card for a future Conspiracy release.

Speaking of Modern, we are closing in on the release of Modern Masters 2017, which happens in March, just over three months from today. At this point, my rule of thumb is simply not to buy expensive Modern staples until the set is spoiled. If you really need something to play with, there can be exceptions, but generally speaking the best thing to do is wait. I might even consider selling off certain cards that seem likely to be reprinted like Liliana of the Veil, Snapcaster Mage, and other high end staples from Innistrad and Return to Ravnica blocks.

On Magic Online, we have good news and bad news related to the Treasure Chests. First, with the Treasure Chests now being tradable and currently selling for about 3.5 tix each, they actually represent a meaningful prize increase to constructed events. On the other hand, using Treasure Chests as the only way to release Commander 2016 and Conspiracy 2 cards has been a disaster. While prices have started to come down a little bit, many of the new legendary creature are 4 tix each, with Leovold, Emissary of Trest at 36 tix and Atraxa, Praetors' Voice nearly 20 tix. Most of these cards are only of interest to casual players, and one of the appeals of Magic Online is that building casual decks is super cheap. Having random Commander cards be so expensive is a huge blow to the casual Magic Online community, which has already been hurting in recent years with the loss of events and delayed release of cards.
