Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The biggest financial news of the week is Wizards' announcement that they will be releasing a small print run of Eternal Masters over the holiday season. While we don't yet know exactly how much each store will get, the reprinting of out-of-stock booster boxes is unprecedented—although maybe it shouldn't be a surprise due to the rise of the Anthologies series in recent years. For players, having more Eternal Masters is a good thing—the reprinting offers another chance to buy a box or maybe even draft at your LGS. On the other hand, for collectors and investors, this is another sign that holding cards (and now even sealed products) as long term investments is increasingly risky.
Meanwhile, Commander 2016 officially released this weekend, and as expected, nearly all of the new cards crashed in price. Many of the new legends dropped between 50–90% on the week. On the other hand, a small group of legends headlined by Reyhan, Last of the Abzan, Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix, and Tana, the Bloodsower, actually increased between 20–30%. While it seems unlikely that these gains will continue, I wouldn't be surprised to find that these cards are among the most popular commanders from the set moving forward.
Finally, in Modern the two big movers are both from Skred Red and shows what happens when a below-the-radar deck not only performs well, but actually wins a major tournament like a Grand Prix. Scrying Sheets increased 58% on the week to over $15, and Koth of the Hammer jumped 35% to more than $10. Rather than a random buyout, it seems that these prices reflect an increased interest in an archetype that many people simply didn't know about. As a result, I wouldn't be surprised to see these prices stick, especially if the deck can put up another result or two in the not too distant future.
