Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance the biggest news is the Marvel Secret Lair drops. They went on sale Monday, sold out instantly as Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks predicted, leaving many people waiting in line for hours for nothing as people used some weird tricks to jump the queue. The good news is that the demand for these cards is obviously incredibly high. The bad news is that, assuming you couldn't get your copies from the sale, the cards are now either expensive or even impossible to find. All of the face Commanders are selling for more than the drops themselves, typically for around $60 on sites like Ebay, and as of this writing, I couldn't find a copy of the most popular legend from the drops - Storm, Force of Nature (Marvel Storm) - for sale on the internet. Without a promise to quickly reprint these cards, over the short term the only real solution is to proxy them if you need them. Sooner or later Wizards will reprint them, which should solve the supply issues, but whether this happens in several months or several years is anyone's guess.
Meanwhile, the demand for Foundations is surprisingly high. A couple of weeks ago collector booster boxes dropped down to $220 on the secondary market. Today it's hard to find them for below $275, a pretty clear sign that vendors underestimated demand for the never rotating core set. Long term I'm not sure what to expect from the set. It seems that a card that suddenly takes off three or four years from now might be primed for a big spike, although it's also possible that Foundations will still be readily available to buy, which would help ensure prices don't get too high. Basically, the unique idea of the set - being legal in Standard for at least five years and possibly forever - makes it hard to predict. We've never seen a set like this before, but the short term data seems to suggest it might be a surprise hit.
Finally in the realm of singles, Underworld Dreams is on the rise thanks to Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. While all versions have increased in the past couple of weeks, the prices for 10th Edition are wonky. The supply of 10th Edition is low, which has lead to a cycle of the card being bought out, spiking the price up to around $30, only to be relisted with prices dropping back down to around $10. If you need copies, your cheapest option is Theros: Beyond Death at just over $3. On the other hand, if you want max bling, the Secret Lair version is currently a massive $46.
