Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Oath of Teferi Rings of Brighthearth Serum Powder

Much like last week, the biggest finance news this week is the continued price spike of pretty much anything that synergizes with planeswalkers in anticipation of War of the Spark. This week the biggest gainer in Standard was Oath of Teferi which jumped 247% to $3.31, while The Immortal Sun broke the $30 mark with a 44% increase. Meanwhile in Modern, Rings of Brighthearth shot up 50% to $60 as a way to double up planeswalker activations while The Chain Veil added 21% up to $30. At this point, many of the most obvious "planeswalkers matter" cards have already increased. Expect to see some weird ones in coming weeks as players and speculators move on to the next level of targets.

Outside of planeswalker, the other big winner in Modern this week was Serum Powder (up 96% to just under $11). The mana rock happens to work really well with the London mulligan rule being tested next month, with the free mulligan greatly increasing your odds of hitting the combo pieces you are looking for, and the downside of having a dead mana rock in your hand being eliminated since you can put it on the bottom of your deck after you mulligan. Frank Karsten wrote a great article on the math of the mulligan rule which does a good job showing off the power of Serum Powder under the new system. It will likely go even higher if the new rule is officially adopted.

Finally, we're starting to see our first presales for Modern Horizons cards. Serra the Benevolent is currently listed for around $50 while Cabal Therapist is in the $20 range. Considering Wizards has said the set isn't limited supply, these prices are absurd. Since there's really no gameplay value to buying these cards now since you won't get them until the set releases in a few months anyway, the best plan is to save your money and wait until closer to release day to get your copies. I wouldn't be surprised to see both of these cards selling for half of their current price later in Modern Horizons spoiler season.
