Finance Brief by SaffronOlive
This week the finance front was dominated by the after effects of Grand Prix Charlotte. The thirteen most viewed cards on the site this week can be found in the top 16 decks of the event. Not only are people viewing these cards, but based on this week's price movement, they are buying them too. Nourishing Shoal shot up 396 percent, Through the Breach up 70 percent, and Goryo's Vengeance up 23 percent on the back of the Top 8 performance of an innovative deck based on cheating Griselbrand into play. Lantern of Insight went from a bulk uncommon to over $6 after the success of a "top of the library" control-mill deck landed it in the top 16 at GP Charlotte - and also in an LSV video on ChannelFireball. Finally, Ezuri, Renegade Leader increased over 200 percent to $8 after Collected Company Elves ended up winning the Grand Prix. Whether or not these prices will stick over the long-haul remains to be seen, but for now these price spikes serve as a good reminder of the power of GPs on the prices of and demand for top-performing cards.
The other big topic of the week was buyouts which have been happening with increased frequency in Modern due to a sort of perfect storm of Modern Masters 2015, back-to-back weekends featuring large Modern tournaments, and the upcoming Modern PTQ season. Whether these buyouts are organic or coordinated, healthy or unhealthy, or foolish or profitable is certainly up for debate, but the good news is things should be calming down shortly as the event schedule shifts towards Standard and Magic Origins replaces Modern Masters 2015 as the hot topic in the community.
Speaking of Magic Origins, pre-sale prices are starting to trickle out. Liliana, Defiant Necromancer and Gideon, Battle-Forged have both started in the low-to-mid $20's, while Chandra, Roaring Flame is currently bringing up the rear of the flip-walker price race at about $15. Also of note is what appears to be a new cycle of legendary creatures - so far only two flavorful members have been revealed: Chandra's parents Pia and Kiran Nalaar and a new elf lord Dwynen, Gilt-Leaf Daen, both of which are currently pre-selling for between $3 and $4. Considering a similar cycle from M13 featuring Talrand, Sky Summoner, Odric, Master Tactician, and Krenko, Mob Boss ended up as intro pack foils, it might be worth waiting until the Magic Origins Intro Packs are announced before getting your copies.
