Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Wrenn and Six Yarok, the Desecrated Painter's Servant

This week, the biggest finance new is still Modern Horizons, and more specifically Wrenn and Six, which is currently up to $88.50 in paper (a 65% increase this week) and 84 tix on Magic Online based on heavy Modern and Legacy play. As a result, the total set price for Modern Horizons increased on the week, with other playables like Hexdrinker (up 97% to $22.25) and Force of Negation (up 18% to $42) leading the way. With a Modern Mythic Championship in a couple of weeks, it's possible more spikes are on the way. Boxes are still available for around $185 and still offer positive expected value. If you still need Modern Horizons cards to round out your collection, try to pick them up soon. Barring some surprise reprints, the set is going to end up very expensive.

Meanwhile in Standard, things are fairly quiet. Yarok, the Desecrated jumped 26% on the week although it hasn't posted any tournament results yet, but the bigger trend is cards dropping in price. Included in this group are most of the Core Set 2020 mythics along with soon-to-be-rotating staples like Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager. Shocklands are also creeping up as we move further and further away from Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance being actively opened. If you still don't own your shocklands, you might as well pick them up; last time they were reprinted in Standard (in Return to Ravnica block) they didn't drop much at rotation, so there isn't a great reason to wait.

Finally, in the world of Commander, Painter's Servant was unbanned this week which lead to the artifact being immediately bought out, causing the price to increase 67% to $45. While Painter's Servant can do some janky fun things, it's also part of an instant-kill combo with Grindstone (up 69% to $26) where you can mill one player's entire library with a single Grindstone activation. The good news is that neither card is on the Reserved List and Wizards loves reprinting Commander cards, so if you have copies, sell or trade into the hype of the unbanning while prices are high. If you don't have copies, just wait for a reprinting to pick up Painter's Servant and Grindstone on the cheap.
