Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest Standard gainer was Pest Control (extended), with the Big Score card shooting up 47% to nearly $8. Crim mentioned on the podcast this week that Pest Control (extended) was one of the best answers to Esper and Dimir Self-Bounce, blowing up a big chunk of their creatures and their cheap, annoying enchantments for just two-mana. If you're tired of getting wrecked by Hopeless Nightmare and friends, consider Pest Control (extended) in your sideboard. It's great in the current meta.
Last week we mentioned Grinding Station. Well this week it shot up even more and is currently sitting at $33 after being at $12 just a month ago. Thanks to the unbanning of Mox Opal, Grinding Station combo has emerged as a legit tier deck in Modern, alongside Energy, Dimir Oculus, and Eldrazi. While the deck is strong, it is also absurdly expensive, coming in at around $1,700. Out of all the cards unbanned in December, Mox Opal is likely the one that could be rebanned at some point, making buying into the archetype a risk. It's hard to see prices increasing too much more because current prices are already so high. At some point players will choose to buy into cheaper tier options like Energy or Oculus (both around $800) or Eldrazi (around $600) rather than plunking down two or three times as much to play Grinding Station.
Finally in Modern, Recruiter of the Guard is climbing thanks to the emergence of WB Blink Taxes, a deck that seems to get even better with the printing of the new Orzhov god in Aetherdrift. In the past, Recruiter of the Guard was more than $30, making its current price tag of $10 look comparatively cheap.
