Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finances was oddly quiet considering we're in the middle of Secrets of Strixhaven spoilers. In Modern, Mox Opal continued to tick up. Before its banning just over a year ago, you could snag copies for around $90. Today, the cheapest printing is $250 as the artifact just keeps slowly gaining in price. This means to play a Modern Affinity deck, you'll need to spend $1,000 just on the Mox Opals, which obviously isn't ideal. The ever-increasing price of Mox Opal highlights one of the challenges of the current era of Magic: there are no reprint sets anymore like Modern Masters, which means there are relatively few logical ways to reprint Mox Opal to drop its price. The best hope is likely some bonus sheet-style reprint, which may or may not drop the price much depending on the specifics, but for now, Mox Opal is - by far - one of the biggest barriers to entry into Modern.
Speaking of Moxen, Mox Amber (retro) is up to $87, and this is despite the fact it was reprinted on the Brothers' War Retro Artifact sheet a couple of years ago (which is why I'm not convinced a reprint sheet reprint of Mox Opal will do a ton to drop its price). Its trajectory looks strikingly similar to Mox Opal on a smaller scale, climbing from $27 in 2024 to $87 today. Wizards' incessant focus on printing legends has turned the card from a bit of a meme into a competitive staple back in Modern. I guess the lesson here is to not underestimate free mana, even with harsh restrictions, as more and more cards are printed, even the narrowest of Moxen can end up staples.
Finally, the Judgment rare Glory (retro) doubled up to $12 this week after finding its way into a GW Madness deck in Premodern. If you need a copy to play with, the Dominaria Remastered reprints are sitting at around $0.50, and if you want to go max bling, the Hebrew Prerelease Promo is currently at $25.
