Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The biggest finance news of the week is the resetting of Standard with a combination of bannings and the release of Rivals of Ixalan. At least for week one, the biggest winners in this new environment are Merfolk (which had Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca, Deeproot Elite, and Jadelight Ranger spike in price), Dinosaurs (with Carnage Tyrant, Regisaur Alpha, and Ripjaw Raptor increasing) and control (with The Scarab God and Search for Azcanta on the rise). While none of these cards doubled in price or anything crazy like that, they are went up between 7% and 37% on the week based on increased demand.
Pauper is starting to make its presence felt in the paper world. Prismatic Strands nearly doubled on the week, with Circular Logic, Standard Bearer, and Moment's Peace on the rise as well. If Pauper takes off in paper, expect more of the same over the short term, although sooner or later Wizards will take notice and start slipping these cards into supplemental products to bring down the price. One of the upsides of Pauper is that basically every important card is reprintable, and Wizards is very much in need of finding more valuable, older cards to reprint.
Finally, on Magic Online, the early Standard winners are a bit different, with Glint-Sleeve Siphoner and Rekindling Phoenix leading the way thanks to some success with Grixis Energy/Midrange decks, along with RB Midrange. The digital market often moves faster than paper, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see these cards show up as winners in the paper market over the next couple of weeks.
