Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is all about Modern and the huge reset the format has experienced since the big ban list update a few weeks ago. The biggest gainer this week was Seasoned Pyromancer. The original Modern Horizons mythic roughly doubled up to between $11 and $13 depending on the printing mostly thanks to the Energy deck. It turns out that Seasoned Pyromancer has been the most popular replacement for the recently banned The One Ring (bundle) and Amped Raptor, which makes a lot of sense considering its synergy with Guide of Souls: the multiple bodies it creates generates enough energy to send a creature to the air all by itself, while also filtering away bad draws. We've seen Seasoned Pyromancer as high as $50 in the past back in 2022. A Double Master 2022 reprinting probably means it will unlikely to reach its former high, although continuing to tick up in the coming months is certainly possible.
Meanwhile, Mox Opal continues to climb. Before its unbanning, the artifact was around $80 and slowly falling. After gaining a few more% this week, it's now pushing $190. At this point there's a strong argument that Mox Opal is the card that Modern needs reprinted the most, although exactly where it can be reprinted isn't exactly clear. It's likely too powerful for Standard sets, too expensive for Commander precons, and we don't know of any Masters sets on the schedule this year. Our best bet might be a special sheet in a Standard set like Brothers' War retro artifacts. If you have extra, unused copies, I'd consider selling them into the hype. Sooner or later the reprint will happen and the price will drop, at least temporarily. Plus, there's always a risk that it turns out that Mox Opal is too strong for Modern and it needs to be rebanned.
In stranger news, Booster Tutor shot up 130% this week to over $11 even though it's an Unhinged card that isn't tournament legal. As far as I can tell, this is due to a Tolarian Community College video featuring "Booster Tutor Commander." While occasionally iconic un-set cards maintain meaningful value, like City of Ass or Mox Lotus (both of which are over $20), in general being illegal for tournament play caps the price of these cards at a few dollars. This said, as Magic becomes more casual and cubing becomes more popular, I wouldn't be surprised to see Booster Tutor join the short list of unset cards with legitimate demand since it is a super fun card to play with.
