Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
I wish I was joking, but the biggest finance news of the week is the buyout of Springjack Shepherd. The uncommon from Eventide jumped a massive 421% from just above bulk to nearly $3.50. We are used to seeing these buyouts with Reserved List cards in Legacy, but not with random, casual, Modern-legal uncommons. While people haven't really started buying at the new price point (TCGplayer market price is about $1), buylist prices have started to increase. The price of Springjack Shepherd will continue to drop, but not to where it was before. Hopefully this is an outlier and not the start of weird Modern buyouts.
Speaking of casual play, the prices of reprints from Conspiracy: Take the Crown have been crushed. I ran the numbers a couple days ago, and every (non-bulk) reprint was down between 50% and 80% from a couple months ago. While I still think some of the chase mythics like Berserk and Show and Tell may have more to lose, it's probably safe to start picking up low-end Commander/casual rares. Sure, some may go from $0.80 to $0.50, but is saving $0.30 really worth waiting?
Finally, on a more competitive note, Engineered Explosives jumped between 50% and 90% this week to between $40 and $50 (depending on the version). While the relationship between Magic Online prices and paper prices is extremely complicated, it is worth keeping track of outliers because they often do mean something. In this case, Engineered Explosives was 8 tix in March and over the past five months climbed all the way to 42 tix. Meanwhile in the paper world, Engineered Explosives was relatively stagnant, staying in the $20 to $26 range. While differing levels of supply means you shouldn't just buy any card that's way more expensive on Magic Online (*cough*Rishadan Port*cough*), Magic Online is a good way to judge demand. When you see a Modern staple like Engineered Explosives increase 500% in a short period of time, it's worth exploring further. At this point, Engineered Explosives is on the list of most expensive Modern cards and is quickly moving up the "we need a reprint" ladder.
