Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, things were fairly quiet outside of an early sneak peak at The Brothers' War. Perhaps the most interesting news is that serialized or numbered cards are coming to Magic for the first time (discounting the X of 100 Viscera Seer that was a bonus card in a Secret Lair drop). The Brothers' War collector boosters will have special rainbow foil schematic art old bordered artifacts numbered X of 500, meaning that only 500 of each card will exist. It will be interesting to see just how much these cards end cost on the secondary market. The Secret Lair Viscera Seer numbered X of 100 doesn't show up on the market often, but the last two copies sold on TCGplayer have went for $3,500 and $4,000. While there will be five times as many of each of the Brothers' War promos in existence, some of them will undoubtedly feature much more playable cards, like Wurmcoil Engine rather than bulk commons like Viscera Seer. It's a safe bet that these cards will command a hefty premium in general, and doubley so for high-demand numbers like 1 of 500, 69 of 500 and 420 of 500.
Speaking of Wurms, Wurmcalling is closing in on $5 after increasing another 25% this week. A couple of months ago it was basically a bulk rare. So what's behind this increase? There have been two new legends printed that are perfect for Wurmcalling with Baru, Wurmspeaker (extended) wanting it for flavor and tribal reasons, while Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss uses it as a combo piece as a seven mana spell it can cast repeatedly to pump and untap something like Marwyn, the Nurturer to make infinte mana and infinite Wurm tokens. Like usual, the main lesson where it to hold onto your weird bulk cards, because sooner or later there will probably be a Commander deck that makes them useful... and expensive.
Speaking of Commander, the Invasion rare Spirit of Resistance is on the rise because of the five-color theme of the Dominaria United Commander precons, more than doubling up recently to $8. Thanks to the Jared Carthalion deck, we now legends that care specifically about having creatures of all five colors and a bunch more five-color creatures to support them, making Spirit of Resistance an interesting upgrade option by preventing all damage to you for doing what your deck wants to do anyway. Toss in that the only printing of the enchantment was way back in Invasion and the stage is set for a price increase despite the fact that "five colors matter" is still a pretty niche theme. It doesn't take that much demand for an old, low-supply card to spike.
