Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance the biggest news is Badgermole Cub. The Avatar mythic jumped 46% to a massive $83 after becoming the new hotness in every format from Standard back to Legacy. In Standard, if you’re playing green you’re almost certainly playing a playset of the two-drop, which has brought Simic Aggro to tier-one status and is also an important part of the new Airbending Combo decks. In Modern, it has led to a resurgence of Yawgmoth decks, while in Legacy it’s showing up in Cradle Control. While it’s still incredibly early and we’ll learn more about Badgermole Cub’s place in Standard at Worlds next weekend, the initial results suggest the card is somewhere between “staple” and “straight-up broken.” Similar to Vivi Ornitier, it’s a card you’ll likely need to play various 60-card formats competitively, although there is some risk it ends up too good—so spending $350 on your playset is at your own risk.
Meanwhile in Commander, Twinning Staff is on the rise, gaining more than 200% this week to between $20 and $30 depending on the printing, thanks to Fire Lord Azula, where the ability to copy all of the spells you cast while Azula is attacking seems pretty busted. It used to be that it took a lot for cards from Commander precons to spike because their supply was so high, but now Commander itself is so huge (and we get so many more precons, which diffuses demand between multiple decks rather than everyone buying the yearly release) that this has changed. While over the short term the artifact should trend back down as the Fire Lord Azula hype slowly fizzles as we move into Lorwyn Eclipsed season, it also seems likely that Wizards will keep printing popular spell-copying commanders—so this will probably happen again in the future.
Along the same lines, Modern Horizons 3’s forgotten mythic Ashling, Flame Dancer jumped over 200% to more than $20 thanks to its synergy with firebending, where it allows you to turn all of your temporary “for combat only” mana into real mana you can use whenever you want. This has made it a staple not just in Fire Lord Azula, the single most popular new legend from Avatar according to EDHRec, but also in other firebending decks as well like Ozai, the Phoenix King and Fire Lord Zuko. If you need a copy, the retro version is technically the cheapest at the moment by a couple of bucks, although no matter what version you pick you’re going to pay way more than you would have a week ago.
