Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, all the biggest news comes from the impending release of Modern Horizons 3. By far the biggest winner of the week was Shuko, with the one-mana equipment shooting up 163% to over $17 (and really it's more than that - just over a week ago Shuko was under $3). One of the most hyped cards from Modern Horizons 3 is Nadu, Winged Wisdom, and Shuko seems like the perfect way to combo off with the Bird Wizards thanks to its free equip cost. Once you get both on the battlefield you can simply move Shuko from creature to creature to trigger Nadu, Winged Wisdom to draw a bunch of cards and ramp. With some additional support - like a creature that makes tokens when a land enters the battlefield or a blink effect like Ephemerate to reset Nadu, Winged Wisdom's "twice each turn" restriction, you should be able to go fully infinite and draw your entire deck. Personally I'd be looking to sell into the hype - even if the deck is good sooner or later Shuko will be reprinted and as an uncommon, its price is likely to crash hard.
Meanwhile it's been a good week to be an Eldrazi with a bunch of older tribe members seeing meaningful price increases thanks to all of the new support from Modern Horizons 3. Technically the biggest Eldrazi gainer was Eldrazi Temple which more than doubled up to $20, although hilariously it was previewed on Friday in one of the MH3 Commander precons, so the price will likely come back down. Even outside of Eldrazi Temple, everything from Thought-Knot Seer (up 36% to $8) to Eldrazi Mimic (up 38% to $3) and Conduit of Ruin (up 12% to $6), along with a bunch more, saw a price increase this week.
Finally Sunken Citadel nearly doubled up this week, gaining 72% to $5.50. We've talked many times before about how lands that make two-mana are usually broken and this includes lands that only make two-mana for activating the abilities of other lands. While Sunken Citadel has arguably been underrated since it was printed, the reason for its spike this week was Shifting Woodland. Rated by many as one of the strongest cards in Modern Horizons 3, the clone land plays extremely well with Sunken Citadel, essentially reducing its down down to three-mana. Long term Sunken Citadel is a card I want in my collection. As Wizards continues to print more and more strong utility lands, it just keeps getting better set by set.
