Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive
|
|
What a crazy week in finance! Not only did we have the official release of Shadows over Innistrad and the beginning of a new Standard format, but we had a very surprising Banned and Restricted Update. As such, I want to touch on a bunch of different cards so I'm going to try to keep my thoughts brief.
First, Eye of Ugin got the banhammer, which should make Eldrazi much less dominant in Modern. This said, it didn't really do anything to prices since most of the Eldrazi are seeing heavy play in Standard and already decreased over the past month. I wouldn't even worry about selling; these cards will still be in demand for the next year.
The surprise part of the B&R announcement was the unbanning of Sword of the Meek and Ancestral Vision. While I'm not convinced either of these cards are going to break Modern, their entry into the format caused a massive price shift. Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas shot up from $15 to over $40, Thopter Foundry jumped from being a bulk uncommon to nearly $10, and even the lowly common Muddle the Mixture shot up to $2.50 thanks to its ability to transmute for both halves of the Sword of the Meek / Thopter Foundry combo. My advice is to dig up any copies of these cards you have along with Ancestral Vision (up from $18 to $43) and Sword of the Meek (up from $5 to $21) themselves, and sell/trade them now into the hype. While these cards will settle at a higher price than their "I'm banned" price, it will very likely be lower than their current, inflated, hype-fueled "I just got unbanned" price.
Finally, we saw a bunch of movement in white cards in Standard, thanks to the revelation that Archangel Avacyn is indeed very powerful. Secure the Wastes and Kytheon, Hero of Akros both jumped around 140% into the $12 range, while Archangel of Tithes increased another 36% and is now over $22. Here again I'd look to sell into the hype. All of these cards rotate in the fall, which means the next couple of weeks (leading up to and just after Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad) will likely be their peaks, even if they end up staples in the new Standard.
