Brawl Bash: The Gitrog Monster (Brawl, Magic Arena)

MTG Arena has been adding some pretty cool Brawl commanders recently as we did just get Talrand, Sky Summoner, and now we've got The Gitrog Monster! I had to build a deck for it and see if The Gitrog Monster could work as a fair deck.

Gameplan

We're a grindy Golgari deck that is looking to get a ton of value out of recursion from our graveyard and The Gitrog Monster can draw us a ton of cards!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Because our froggy little friend is a lands matter style of deck, it was only natural we run a ton of things like Elvish Reclaimer to get more value off of it. At a point, I was running Acoluyte of Affliction but I ended up cutting it for more game-ending threats.

We also have a pretty sweet tag team in these two cards...

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove synergizes so well with Dread Presence as all of our lands count as swamps. The Dryad also pairs well with Nissa, Who Shakes the World so we've got that perfect synergy included!

Lastly, with how much we throw our own cards away while also drawing a ton of cards I would be concerned about us milling ourselves out of the game but luckily I added an emergency big red button!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Loaming Shaman will allow us to shuffle any number of cards back into our deck so this should be able to buy us even more time. Because of this card, we do have to be mindful of what we're exiling when we're casting Polukranos, Unchained as the escape does have a real cost to it.

Conclusion

We went 4-1 with the deck overall but with the way the deck plays, we got blown out by a Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner deck that really punished us for playing one big threat a turn. I think the deck is currently built as a typical Golgari deck but maybe it could be built with more ramp in mind so we can turbo out our commander. However, if we go all in on the commander engine, we get blown out by any removal so maybe I'll just split the difference and play a few more ramp creatures like Paradise Druid and Leyline Prowler. Here's what an updated list would look like

I'll probably do more Brawl videos for the sweet commanders that Arena has been putting into brawl so get ready for a Talrand, Sky Summoner deck! As always, thanks for watching.
