Commander Clash S2 Episode 27: Viewer Submitted Decks

Hello and welcome to Commander Clash, a video series where several MTGGoldfish contributors battle in a four player Commander game for fun and bragging rights. Last week, we asked you guys to submit your own commander decks for us to play. The amount of decks submitted this time was absolutely insane! Thank you so much for sending us your lists! We had a ton of sweet brews to choose from, but unfortunately we can only pick four. Here's what we settled on:

  • Seth plays a mishmash deck with all the "you win the game" cards jammed together led by Sliver Queen (submitted by SquilliumFancyShot)
  • Richard has chosen Moonfolk Tribal as his next janky tribe, championed by Azami, Lady of Scrolls (submitted by LoganPro Media)
  • Tom plays an Angel Tribal deck loaded with sweet card advantage led by the aggressive and versatile Jenara, Asura of War (submitted by BloodOfTheWolf)
  • Tomer pilots an "Activated Ability Tribal" deck, which focuses on abusing activated abilities, with Progenitus (submitted by MrZoichi)

Get comfortable, boys and girls, because this is a long game! But first, a quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Post-Game Thoughts

So it wasn't the most exciting game this time. It happens. Some of the decks really stumbled over themselves this time but a single game isn't always indicative of how a deck will typically play out.

I picked the Activated Ability Tribal deck because it's a unique concept that I've never seen done before in all my years of playing Commander. I loved the idea of drawing another 3 cards off Arcanis the Omnipotent by untapping it with Magewright Stone, or tutoring up two creatures by copying Captain Sisay's trigger with Rings of Brighthearth. The biggest draw, of course, was the chance to live the dream of killing one (or more!) people with Door to Nothingness. Unfortunately, the deck just drew poorly; land flooded for most of the game, then land-screwed the rest of the game.

As for constructive criticism on the deck, I would recommend smoothing out the curve a bit and cutting down on those 6-drops and higher. It could use more ramp as well since a lot of the activated abilities need mana, and probably better sources of fixing (cut Burgeoning). A bit more reliable card draw would help smooth things too. The deck really wants to see those crucial activated ability support pieces -- an early Rings of Brighthearth would've helped me out so much -- so maybe a couple more tutors would work, from Fabricate, the good ol' reliable Demonic Tutor, or some fancy on-theme transmutes like Drift of Phantasms. There were also some card choices that I'm unsure of, like Phenax, God of Deception, which wants to mill people out yet the rest of the deck doesn't support the mill gameplan.

Overall the deck is really cool and utterly unique. It's rare indeed that I come across a deck these days that I haven't seen before. I've played a lot of Commander, after all! So it was a real treat. Plus, I've never won with Door to Nothingness and it's on my short list of things to pull off in Commander Clash, and this deck is probably the best way I've seen to pull it off in a non-cheesy combo manner.

Next Week: TBA!

We haven't decided on what we're playing next week. The recording went on long and we had to call it a night right after. We'll figure it soonish and probably tweet it out and/or leave a comment about it once we settle on a theme. As always, we love to hear from you guys! Tell us what you like to see, what you don't like, any ideas that we can put forward for future videos, or anything else you'd like to tell us! You can reach us in the comments section below or tweet me @BudgetCommander.
