Pioneer Peak: Abzan Midrange (Pioneer, Magic Online)

This week, I've left everyone with a TOKEN of appreciation... get it? Here, let me explain the joke because jokes are always funnier when explained.... Oh wait, nevermind. Here's the decklist...

The deck is a nice mixture of a token and midrange deck. Here are a few token producers..

Voice of Resurgence [DGM]Nissa, Voice of Zendikar [OGW]Gideon, Ally of Zendikar [BFZ]Sorin, Solemn Visitor [KTK]

This is only a few of the token producers but instead of relying on cards like Raise the Alarm, all of our token producers are attached to resilient threats that can help us grind the long game while also not folding to a single board wipe. Voice of Resurgence was a card I never thought I'd play but here we are. The card punishes decks that try to interact on our turn. The lack of cards like Magma Spray means that we're likely to get a token. Of course the other part of this deck is almost a superfriends deck! If you haven't noticed, all three of our planeswalkers create a little critter and can also pump all of our team.

Smuggler's Copter [KLD]

Another powerhouse in our deck is Smuggler's Copter. This card is the best card aggro has so we can use this to turn up the heat while also building the perfect hand. With the various ways we can make creatures, it shouldn't be hard to crew multiple copies of this card while also attacking with an army of plants, knights, and vampires!

We've also got some of the best cards to disrupt opponents with. Thoughtseize has instantly become a staple of the format if you're playing black. The card will allow us to strip any problematic cards in our opponent's hands while also being extremely mana efficient. Fatal Push is a card that will always be welcomed as right now we need it to stop opposing Smuggler's Copter and Mutavault. Assassin's Trophy is what gives us a clean answer to problematic Field of the Deads that are all over the format. The versatility of trophy in this format is worth giving our opponent an additional land in my opinion.

The league was rough to us as we ended 1-4. I think the biggest issue was that we werent aggressing nor controlling enough to take down some of the matches. The list was originally by SpaceCowboyBatman(Cognrats on the 5-0!) and they probably have a better understanding of what is needed in all their matchups. Though we didn't get anywhere near the 5-0 mark, I do like the idea behind the deck. However, if I were to move forward with the deck, I'd just build a more midrange variant and cut out the tokens. That's right, time to sleeve up Siege Rhino and Grim Flayer! I also think cards like Legion's End are amazing with Mono Black running around. Here's a rough draft of a list I'd like to try
