Pioneer Peak: Were-Woofs


It's been a minute since we got to play some Pioneer and in this episode we continue to celebrate Halloween and October by doing a Werewolves deck! We lose out on a ton of powerful wolves from Innistrad but maybe Embercleave can carry us? Here's the list I threw together

Gameplan

The deck wants to get on the ground early with it's wolves. Unfortunately, the Innistrad wolves are gone for Pioneer so this will be everything from Shadows over Innistrad block and forward!

These Wolves aren't the strongest but cards like Kessig Prowler, Duskwatch Recruiter, and Lambholt Pacifist will be our early game. We'll also have access to Geier Reach Bandit which can transform all of our early drops to turn them into bigger and beefier bodies.

We'll also have access to Silverfur Partisan which can help us leave behind a body for when our wolves are targeted. Spirit of the Hunt will hopefully buff our wolves to keep them in the game longer and make combat a bit trickier for our opponents.

We lose out on cards like Immerwolf in pioneer so our lord effects will come from Howlpack Resurgence and Nightpack Ambusher. The nice thing about these lord effects is that they both have flash. We've also got an Embercleave to close a game out of nowhere!

Lastly, we've got our two planeswalkers in Vivien, Champion of the Wilds and Garruk, Unleashed. Vivien will help us play around sweepers as all of our threats will have flash but more importantly, she can help us dig for more threats to keep the wolves coming. Garruk is really just there to help us push our wolves through bigger bodies and chump blockers.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, we finished with a record of Doran, the Siege Tower's stats. We got games in between matches but it's about what you'd expect from SOI block wolves without some of our older wolves. I do hope when we get the Innistrad Werewolves cards next year, this archetype will get a boost in time for our Halloween tribes. The deck is just outclassed by every creature made from 2019 forward. Though we lost a lot, our time under the moonlight shall hopefully return with a vengeance!
