Tarkir: Dragonstorm Removal List


This is a list of all the removal in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, divided into permanent creature removal, temporary creature removal (such as bounce, tap, and falter effects), non-creature removal, and off-battlefield removal (hand, stack, and graveyard).

  • Ringing Strike Mastery is listed as permanent creature removal even though in the late game your opponent may be willing to pay five mana to untap the affected creature.
  • Unsparing Boltcaster is not listed as creature removal because it cannot kill a creature without some other way of doing damage to it.
  • Rot-Curse Rakshasa is not listed as creature removal because it doesn't prevent the affected creatures from blocking, and because they can still attack one more time.
  • Voice of Victory and Mistrise Village can both neutralize any countermagic your opponent may have, but they're not listed as off-battlefield removal because that usage is very narrow and because countermagic tends to not be played frequently in Limited.
  • The list does not include cards from the Special Guests bonus sheet because they only occur in one of every 64 packs.
  • I'm not listing Planeswalker removal because there are only two Planeswalkers in the set, both at Mythic.

White, Black, and Red each have three playable removal spells at Common: White has Coordinated Maneuver, Osseous Exhale, and Stormplain Detainment; Black has Worthy Cost, Caustic Exhale, and Dragon's Prey; and Red has Molten Exhale, Twin Bolt, and Narset's Rebuke. As you might expect, Mardu decks will have access to plenty of removal. Additionally, Coordinated Maneuver and Worthy Cost work best in Mardu decks due to the Mobilize mechanic, followed distantly by Abzan where the Endure mechanic can be used to create additional Spirit creatures.

The removal spells with hybrid mana in their mana costs can be played in any deck. While they are at their best in a deck with colors matching their clan, they can be played in decks that run only some of their colors if needed (or even none of their colors, although that is unlikely to happen in a format where most players will likely be in three or more colors).

As noted in my article on the instant-speed tricks in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, there are six spells that confer Hexproof or Indestructible or otherwise allow you to protect a creature from removal. This is especially important to keep in mind if your opponent is playing White and has two mana open.

Permanent Creature Removal

White - Static Snare Uncommon Enchantment Flash This spell costs {1} less to cast for each attacking creature. When this enchantment enters, exile target artifact or creature an opponent controls until this enchantment leaves the battlefield.
Coordinated Maneuver Common Instant Choose one — • Coordinated Maneuver deals damage equal to the number of creatures you control to target creature or planeswalker. • Destroy target enchantment.
Osseous Exhale Common Instant As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may behold a Dragon. (You may choose a Dragon you control or reveal a Dragon card from your hand.) Osseous Exhale deals 5 damage to target attacking or blocking creature. If a Dragon was beheld, you gain 2 life.
- Rally the Monastery Uncommon Instant This spell costs {2} less to cast if you've cast another spell this turn. Choose one — • Create two 1/1 white Monk creature tokens with prowess. • Up to two target creatures you control each get +2/+2 until end of turn. • Destroy target creature with power 4 or greater.
Stormplain Detainment Common Enchantment When this enchantment enters, exile target nonland permanent an opponent controls until this enchantment leaves the battlefield.
Clarion Conqueror Rare Creature Flying Activated abilities of artifacts, creatures, and planeswalkers can't be activated. 3/3
Elspeth, Storm Slayer Mythic Planeswalker If one or more tokens would be created under your control, twice that many of those tokens are created instead. +1: Create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token. 0: Put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control. Those creatures gain flying until your next turn. −3: Destroy target creature an opponent controls with mana value 3 or greater.
Blue Ringing Strike Mastery Common Enchantment Enchant creature When this Aura enters, tap enchanted creature. Enchanted creature doesn't untap during its controller's untap step. Enchanted creature has "{5}: Untap this creature."
Fresh Start Uncommon Enchantment Flash Enchant creature Enchanted creature gets -5/-0 and loses all abilities.
Black Worthy Cost Common Sorcery As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature. Exile target creature or planeswalker.
- Caustic Exhale Common Instant As an additional cost to cast this spell, behold a Dragon or pay {1}. (To behold a Dragon, choose a Dragon you control or reveal a Dragon card from your hand.) Target creature gets -3/-3 until end of turn.
Desperate Measures Uncommon Instant Target creature gets +1/-1 until end of turn. When it dies under your control this turn, draw two cards.
Petty Revenge Uncommon Sorcery Destroy target creature with power 3 or less. (Then shuffle this card into its owner's library.)
Strategic Betrayal Uncommon Sorcery Target opponent exiles a creature they control and their graveyard.
/ Dragon's Prey Common Instant This spell costs {2} more to cast if it targets a Dragon. Destroy target creature.
Wail of War Uncommon Instant Choose one — • Creatures target opponent controls get -1/-1 until end of turn. • Return up to two target creature cards from your graveyard to your hand.
Exude Toxin Rare Sorcery Flying Ward—Discard a card.
Salt Road Skirmish Uncommon Sorcery Destroy target creature. Create two 1/1 red Warrior creature tokens. They gain haste until end of turn. Sacrifice them at the beginning of the next end step.
Gurmag Rakshasa Uncommon Creature Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.) When this creature enters, target creature an opponent controls gets -2/-2 until end of turn and target creature you control gets +2/+2 until end of turn. 5/5
Red -> - Channeled Dragonfire Uncommon Sorcery Channeled Dragonfire deals 2 damage to any target. Harmonize {5}{R}{R} (You may cast this card from your graveyard for its harmonize cost. You may tap a creature you control to reduce that cost by {X}, where X is its power. Then exile this spell.)
Stadium Headliner Rare Creature Mobilize 1 (Whenever this creature attacks, create a tapped and attacking 1/1 red Warrior creature token. Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step.) {1}{R}, Sacrifice this creature: It deals damage equal to the number of creatures you control to target creature. 1/1
Molten Exhale Common Sorcery You may cast this spell as though it had flash if you behold a Dragon as an additional cost to cast it. (To behold a Dragon, choose a Dragon you control or reveal a Dragon card from your hand.) Molten Exhale deals 4 damage to target creature or planeswalker.
Twin Bolt Common Instant Twin Bolt deals 2 damage divided as you choose among one or two targets.
Charring Bite Uncommon Sorcery Charring Bite deals 5 damage to target creature without flying. (Then shuffle this card into its owner's library.)
Sunset Strikemaster Uncommon Creature {T}: Add {R}. {2}{R}, {T}, Sacrifice this creature: It deals 6 damage to target creature with flying. 3/1
Overwhelming Surge Uncommon Instant Choose one or both — • Overwhelming Surge deals 3 damage to target creature. • Destroy target noncreature artifact.
Narset's Rebuke Common Instant Narset's Rebuke deals 5 damage to target creature. Add {U}{R}{W}. If that creature would die this turn, exile it instead.
Green Piercing Exhale Common Instant As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may behold a Dragon. (You may choose a Dragon you control or reveal a Dragon card from your hand.) Target creature you control deals damage equal to its power to target creature or planeswalker. If a Dragon was beheld, surveil 2.
Sarkhan's Resolve Common Instant Choose one — • Target creature gets +3/+3 until end of turn. • Destroy target creature with flying.
Dragonbroods' Relic Uncommon Artifact {T}, Tap an untapped creature you control: Add one mana of any color. {3}{W}{U}{B}{R}{G}, Sacrifice this artifact: Create a 4/4 Dragon creature token named Reliquary Dragon that's all colors. It has flying, lifelink, and "When this token enters, it deals 3 damage to any target." Activate only as a sorcery.
Knockout Maneuver Uncommon Sorcery Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control, then it deals damage equal to its power to target creature an opponent controls.
Multi-Color Defibrillating Current Uncommon Sorcery Defibrillating Current deals 4 damage to target creature or planeswalker and you gain 2 life.
Dragonclaw Strike Uncommon Sorcery Double the power and toughness of target creature you control until end of turn. Then it fights up to one target creature an opponent controls. (Each deals damage equal to its power to the other.)
Kin-Tree Severance Uncommon Instant Exile target permanent with mana value 3 or greater.
-> - Glacial Dragonhunt Uncommon Sorcery Draw a card, then you may discard a card. When you discard a nonland card this way, Glacial Dragonhunt deals 3 damage to target creature. Harmonize {4}{U}{R} (You may cast this card from your graveyard for its harmonize cost. You may tap a creature you control to reduce that cost by {X}, where X is its power. Then exile this spell.)
Lie in Wait Uncommon Sorcery Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand. Lie in Wait deals damage equal to that card's power to target creature.
Awaken the Honored Dead Rare Enchantment (As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after III.) I — Destroy target nonland permanent. II — Mill three cards. III — You may discard a card. When you do, return target creature or land card from your graveyard to your hand.
Barrensteppe Siege Rare Enchantment As this enchantment enters, choose Abzan or Mardu. • Abzan — At the beginning of your end step, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control. • Mardu — At the beginning of your end step, if a creature died under your control this turn, each opponent sacrifices a creature of their choice.
Inevitable Defeat Rare Instant This spell can't be countered. Exile target nonland permanent. Its controller loses 3 life and you gain 3 life.
Sonic Shrieker Uncommon Creature Flying When this creature enters, it deals 2 damage to any target and you gain 2 life. If a player is dealt damage this way, they discard a card. 4/4
Dragonback Assault Mythic Enchantment When this enchantment enters, it deals 3 damage to each creature and each planeswalker. Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, create a 4/4 red Dragon creature token with flying.
Jeskai Revelation Mythic Instant Return target spell or permanent to its owner's hand. Jeskai Revelation deals 4 damage to any target. Create two 1/1 white Monk creature tokens with prowess. Draw two cards. You gain 4 life.
Death Begets Life Mythic Sorcery Destroy all creatures and enchantments. Draw a card for each permanent destroyed this way.
Ureni, the Song Unending Mythic Creature Flying, protection from white and from black When Ureni enters, it deals X damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures and/or planeswalkers your opponents control, where X is the number of lands you control. 10/10
