Fish Five-0: Terror of the Jund Peaks

With Teferi, Time Raveler, Wilderness Reclamation, and Cauldron Familiar leaving the format, can Midrange exist again? The first thing that came to mind was the amount of creatures that didn't see play due to it not having an impact upon immediately hitting the board. This lead me to look at creatures like Thief of Sanity, Terror of the Peaks, and Elder Gargaroth. Naturally, I went to Grixis Midrange but what about Jund? I got to brewing and then Michael Majors also dropped a list that played Chevill, Bane of Monsters, which is a card I've been in love with. Mostly because Chevill looks like Kraven (one of Spiderman's Villains). Anywho, I took a look at that list and then did what I do best....make it even greedier.

Gameplan

This deck is an old playstyle that I'm not really sure can survive in 2020 Magic. Its the play style of just solid threats being played with no snowballing advantage. It's the Midrange of old!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00   $ 0.00 $ 0.00

Upfront and center are the two Mythic bombs from Core 2021. These cards for quite sometime just didn't live up to the power of standard as they were quite easily dismissed by opponents as you could just lose the game by the time you cast these. Standard's power level required you to play creatures that had an immediate impact due to Teferi bouncing and so forth. With the crazy cards getting the ban hammer, these cards aim to slowly get their value engine online as Terror of the Peaks or Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger is an immediate three damage which is really sweet. We also have Elder Gargaroth which has so much text, it has to be good. The thing that makes Gargaroth great is that it's stats dunk on Baneslayer Angel and whatever flying threats the opponents have. It also triggers when you attack OR block which is huge. If you ever get these two five drops onboard simultaneously, thats a sweet value engine.

Radha, Heart of Keld is another powerful three drop as its a more aggressive Courser of Kruphix that can be a great mana sink in the late game. Being able to hit our early land drops is huge but more importantly, our lack of ways to draw and manipulate the top of our deck means its nice to be able to use Radha to dig to our next threat. This card has greatly benefited from the fact that Teferi is gone. I'm not sure Sacrifice decks leave the format as Claim the Firstborn is still one heck of a card and this is another target for them to steal but Radha's upsides are perfect for a midrange gameplan.

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Another sweet three drop I'm high on is Garruk's Harbinger. After the bans, I think black removal just got unlocked and with the uptick in black removal spells, this card shines. It can dig for a threat everytime it connects. It's also got a decent body as four power will trade with a good amount of things.

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Even if Wilderness Reclamation is gone, there are still tons of artifacts and enchantments that need to be answered, and here's my hoe to remove those threats while also just giving us a solid body.

Conclusion

The deck could definitely use a lot more ways to interact with going wide strategies as the original list just didn't have a ton of ways to deal with the mono red decks. I assumed Cavalcade of Calamity will be popular and that's why I threw in Kaervek, the Spiteful but maybe that was too cute and could just be a Ritual of Soot or Extinction Event. Overall, the deck needed to be tuned to deal with things above three mana because often times a Spawn of Mayhem would just be unkillable for us. I still think there is room for a Jund deck but this deck is a little too fair as Elementals, Simic Flash, Mono Black, and Embercleave still exist. Back to the drawing board for me!

Thanks for watching and reading.
