Commander Clash S4 Episode 5: CMC Tribal

Hello and welcome to Commander Clash, a video series where several MTGGoldfish contributors battle in a four player Commander game for fun and bragging rights. This week is Tribal CMC, where each of us build a deck where all the nonland cards must share the same converted mana cost. Let's see what we've got:

  • Tom picks 3 CMC, running a Midrange +1/+1 Counter deck that looks to grow an unstoppable army with the partners Reyhan, Last of the Abzan and Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist
  • Jennifer chooses 2 CMC, coming out of the gates swinging with an Aggro Hatebears deck looking to take full advantage of the early game with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
  • Richard picks 4 CMC, piloting a Mono Black Midrange/Control deck looking to out-value the rest of the field while driving around in blinged cars piloted by King Macar, the Gold-Cursed
  • Tomer was last to pick so he ended up with 6 CMC, running an ambitious Control deck that plays all the best cards after stalling a bit with a turn 4 Tasigur, the Golden Fang

Deck construction is extremely limited this week, so let's see how the crew adapts! But first, a quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Post-Game Thoughts

I liked this week's theme. I thought each person brought a deck that really took advantage of their CMC in different ways. My favorite of the bunch was Jennifer's Thalia, Guardian of Thraben; Mono White is usually the weakest deck type, but she really took advantage of the Hatebears / Weenie archetype and did serious work.

Unfortunately for me, however, my deck fell flat on its face. This is the most disappointing Clash for me personally because I spent so much time making what I felt was not just an original deck, but a good deck, which I felt confident in performing well against the other decks this week, despite most people thinking it wouldn't. It was incredibly bad draws, one bad call to cycle Remote Isle, and two Bojuka Bogs stopping me from casting Tasigur, the Golden Fang and stabilizing.

Since I couldn't get to show off this sweet deck, please allow a moment of self-indulgence while I explain what it wanted to do:

The deck is designed to consistently have Tasigur, the Golden Fang out on turn 4. A 4/5 blocker is big enough to halt early attacks from the lower CMC decks, and once we start dropping 6 cmc threats we should take control of the board.

We have 22 cards to use before turn 5 to make sure Tasigur comes out early:
0 cmc = Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, Bad River
1 = Reason // Believe, River Serpent
2 = Drifting Djinn, Elvish Aberration, Jhessian Zombies, Rampaging Hippo, Shoreline Ranger, Twisted Abomination, Myriad Landscape, Polluted Mire, Remote Isle, Slippery Karst, Fetid Pools, Myriad Landscape
3= Ethereal Usher, Netherborn Phalanx, Beseech the Queen
4 = Shefet Monitor, Blighted Woodland

That's 41 lands + 4 landcyclers, 3 fetchlands, 4 cycling lands, 3 ramps at 2 and 4cmc, 2 transmute spells, 1 aftermath spell, 3cmc beseech the queen, plus other cycling cards to make sure we cast Tasigur, the Golden Fang on turn 4 or 5 and keep making land drops until we can cast our 6 cmc spells. We will undoubtedly be behind the rest of the table early on, so we're packing 5 board wipes.

The deck even has Mike n' Trike because they're both 6 cmc!

Ugh. Disappointing.

Next Week: Movie Night!

We're doing another Movie Night! Each of us are building a flavorful deck based on a movie we like. Warning: there will be spoilers!
