Single Scoop: Revel In Removal (Historic)


This week we've got a fun Bo1 lists for mages out there that love casting removal spells on everything. Not only do we get to keep the board state clean of creatures but we also pack Revel In Riches as a way to win!

Gameplan

The gameplan is quite simple, never let the opponents have creatures. When our deck is loaded with a ton of kill spells, we naturally are weak to non-creature decks or any control deck, but if you're having a rough go with beating Gruul in Historic or other aggro decks, this deck has been wonderful and oddly fun. It doesn't do anything flashy outside of using Mastermind's Acquisition to grab one of our win conditions out of the sideboard

The main ways we'll try to win is through killing enough things and then hitting the "win the game" clause on Revel in Riches but there are other methods like Banefire, which is great as it's uncounterable. We also pack other sweet cards like Platinum Angel as a way to keep ourselves alive when we're at a low health total as we will then force our opponents to find a way to interact with the angel.

Outside of that, we just have almost every removal spell you can find as a way to keep ourselves afloat long enough. It is worth mention that we are filled with one for one spells and that can lead us to fall behind once we've run out of spells but hopefully, you'll have a Phyrexian Arena and Castle Locthwain to keep you in the game.

Speaking of our card draw engines, just be mindful that we don't have any "auto wins" outside of Revel in Riches and that's why I've added that card into our deck. So plan ahead and don't mill yourself!

Conclusion

The deck definitely showcased how good we are against most creature decks. Revel in Riches is a fun card but the issue is at the end of the day it's a five-mana enchantment that doesn't do anything upon entering and that can cost us. I don't think there are many ways to beat control decks as most of our creature-based ways to win are too slow and our answers don't counter a planeswalker  so even if we load up on more planeswalker removal, that won't change how they've already gotten most of their value by activating it and then forcing us to answer it. Although I don't think planeswalkers resolving are bad unless they're backed behind a ton of counterspells and so forth. If you don't like the Revel in Riches in the main deck, I'd recommend adding another The Immortal Sun in its place.

The deck is great when you think of all the removal spells we blank just by only playing zombies from Liliana or a singleton Massacre Girl. This deck definitely feels like the classic Mono-Black Control decks that have existed in the past but in today's metagame, its a niche deck that should be used to hunt specific decks in the meta so if you're a fan of the old Mono-Black Control decks or just want to stomp Gruul, this deck is perfect!
