Single Scoop: Mono White Prison (Historic, Magic Arena)


The season just passed but last season I decided I'd try for Mythic through Historic. I did it all through the best of one queue and had a blast as I was able to pilot a deck that was absolutely well-positioned against most aggressive decks and the Neoform deck. That deck would be:

The core of the deck revolves around the combo of Nine Lives and Solemnity

With these two cards together, damage will no longer be relevant to us which is absolutely hilarious against Goblin decks. However, there are things running around in the meta that can still get around this like Bonecrusher Giant and Questing Beast. Bonecrusher Giant is going to be the most common card as Stomp negates our damage prevention along with Texting Beast aka Questing Beast. The way we beat this is to hope that we get our combo pieces early so that our health is healthy enough to take a hit. We've got some countermeasures to these cards in Gideon's Intervention to name whatever problems we might have and Overwhelming Splendor for Questing Beast

Thanks to Kaladesh, we have Authority of the Consuls which is a huge player when landed early against Red deck, Goblins, and Gruul. Both decks rely on their haste aggression which gets nullified and gains us life. The card also forces opponents to commit to our sweepers or else we can sit back and continue to assemble our combo. Authority is also amazing against decks like Neoform as we get a turn to answer the board. Combine that with Grafdigger's Cage, we should have a pretty good lock on a ton of creature decks in the format. Cage covers our bases for Goblins, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, Collected Company, and a ton of other decks. Of course, we also have Rest in Peace to shut down God-Pharaoh's Gift and the dying triggers of cards like Dreadhorde Butcher and Midnight Reaper. Rest in Peace also dunks on Rakdos Pyromancer and other graveyard strategies. To continue the trend of protecting ourselves, Leyline of Sanctity is here as a way for us to turn off cards like Thoughtseize, Burn Spells, and whatever shenanigans opponents can target us with. 

Our win conditions aren't flashy nor are they quick but they get the job done

Karn, the Great Creator isn't really what wins on its own but it definitely tutors things that can limit the opponent's ability to play Magic against you. With decks like Mono Brown picking up popularity, it's really nice to also have main deck Stony Silence against the opponent. We now have a better sweeper effect to tutor out with Karn in Cataclysmic Gearhulk. Just make sure to not play the Gearhulk when you have two Nine Lives hehe.  Another card Kaladesh brings us is Planar Bridge. It may seem like a terrible card but sometimes we're desperate for our combo or an Overwhelming Splendor.

Castle Ardenvale is the other win condition by making an army of 1/1's to close the game out. The Immortal Sun gives our 1/1s an anthem. The other obvious win condition is Approach of the Second Sun. Most people usually concede before this point as a singleton Approach is often hard to find but sometimes people want to wait it out to see if you have a win condition other than people conceding and this is exactly that. It's also not embarrassing to gain seven life when you're trying to buy a turn. 

Conclusion

The deck performed as well as we wanted it to! The deck was a blast (for us usually)! I personally love this deck for climbing the best of one ladder as long as we dodge control decks. If I had one final tip for playing the deck, I normally concede when I see Mono Blue, Doom Foretold, or any counterspell heavy deck as we could potentially win but the percentages are so low that it's better to save our time if we're trying to climb efficiently. Otherwise, most matches are fair game!
