Single Scoop: Indomitable Red (Historic, Magic Arena)


Kaladesh is here! With KLD's release, we had to get into some shenanigans and the first thing I could think of was Indomitable Creativity. I played a Boros version of this in Pioneer, but in Pioneer you had token generators like Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and sweet answers like Chained to the Rocks. Unfortunately Historic doesn't have these cards yet so we're just going to drop White and go Mono Red as we get access to tons of sweet cards like Valakut Awakening, Forbidden Friendship, Fire Prophecy and Dwarven Mine.... wait what!?

Gameplan

We're very much a combo deck as our combo relies on Indomitable Creativity, three to four creatures or artifacts, and Terror of the Peaks or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger.

The combo is to sacrifice artifacts and tokens made to Indomitable Creativity to get Terror of the Peaks out. For example, if X on Creativity is three, then that's 30 damage with any mixture of threats. You can figure out the damage as X grows. We don't play any other artifacts or creatures in the deck so you're always guaranteed to hit Terrors and Ulamog at some point! The nice thing about Terror is that it's not absolutely embarrassing to cast fairly. It's definitely not as efficient but I've won games with Terror of the Peaks pinging opponents from the tokens our Chandra and spells create!

Setting up for this combo heavily relies on our token producers.

All of these cards are self-explanatory but with Chandra, Acolyte of Flame, you can make two 1/1 tokens every turn for a simple activation which really helps when it comes to us being tight on mana. Just remember that our creature tokens can be removed in response to the casting of Indomitable Creativity. I always feel a lot better when targeting treasure tokens made off of Pirate's Pillage

When playing a deck like this, you're going to eventually draw your win conditions which you don't actually want in hand! Those Terrors and Ulamogs should be in your deck! This is why we're loaded with cards like Fire Prophecy and Valakut Awakening to tuck these cards away when drawn into our hands. Just make sure you're not unlucky like me. I've definitely tucked a few Terrors to draw a Terror and an Ulamog but hey.... that's why I don't go to Vegas (amongst other reasons).

Another way to win the game is to shift gears and go Chandra tribal as Chandra, Acolyte of Flame can use her first 0 ability to help Chandra, Torch of Defiance ultimate the turn after casting her by putting Torch of Defiance up to 6 loyalty and then 7 loyalty the following turn to ultimate. 

Conclusion

The deck has very polarized games where we just obliterate our opponents and can come out of nowhere with a victory. But if you're paired against an aggro deck, you fold instantly if you don't have your sweepers like Sweltering Suns. We also struggle against counterspell heavy decks but if the control deck ever taps out, we can instantly punish. As you saw, Neoform destroyed us but our combo is quite satisfying although it is a bit slower. If I were to turn this into a best of three deck, I'd be aggressively looking to blow up Grafdigger's Cage with a more aggressive sideboard plan with cards like Legion Warboss and might just ditch the combo all around!
