Single Scoop: Getting Even (Historic, Magic Arena)


Not too long ago, Gyruda, Doom of Depths was dominating everywhere. Now, Gyruda is an afterthought and we're going to try to take advantage of that by cheating out a ton of big creatures in the Historic best of one queues!

Gameplan

We're all in on the ramping plan to get Gyruda out early.

We don't interact too much with our opponents until we hit six mana for a Massacre Wurm so we've got to accelerate through the early turns ASAP. With a plethora of Simic cards to noodle around with, that shouldn't be too difficult. Once we've accelerated to six mana, its time to slam our big bombs

Of course, there's the companion that cares about getting even, Gyruda! As we've seen before, this card can pop off and give us big turns as the card doesn't care if the opponent has graveyard hate. Gyruda is very much self-explanatory as it will cheat out our big threats like Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. In best of one, there are tons of X/2 creatures that an early Massacre Wurm will eat up and wreck the opponent's gameplan and burn our opponents out. One of the biggest decks we want the wurm against is Goblins so let's spin the wheel and cross our fingers!

The next piece of the deck revolves around copying and cloning our bombs. Spark Double helps us ignore the legendary rule and can keep the mill train going. Vizier of Many Faces won't ignore the legendary rule but can give us another use by cloning the original Gyruda and then sacrificing the Vizier clone. Of course, Vizier allows us to copy other creatures on the board in case we need to stall to stay alive and then go off!

With so many clone effects, it's obvious that we'd throw Thassa, Deep-Dwelling to blink our clones or our big threats to keep the "enters the battlefield" value going! 

Conclusion

The deck definitely got the jump on our opponents but you saw the weaknesses in the deck. That weakness was quite apparent when we got paired against hyper aggro decks as a simple removal on a mana dork paired with aggression could derail us. Though the deck is fragile, it also has those explosive turns where you remember why this deck was great the first few weeks of its standard life! This deck hardcore loses to Mono-Blue or any counterspell heavy deck so hopefully, you dodge those match-ups. On top of that, any deck running Extinction Event will embarrass us. This deck screams best of one because the gimmick is up once we get to sideboarding. If you're into some good ol' RnG/Spin the Wheel style of decks, this deck will scratch that itch!
