Single Scoop: Get in the Mech, Dragon!

Gameplan

Standard now has cheaper dragons and that's a major upgrade as the format can punish you for playing too many clunky threats. MTGNeon has brought us two new dragons I'd like to try out in, Atsushi, the Blazing Sky and Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa.

Atushi enters a format that could punish you for having a threat that doesn't do anything upon entering the battlefield but the death trigger is nice as it pairs nicely if we need the burst in mana. When we've got all the mana we need, we've got the ability to exile two off the top of our deck! Not to mention that the treasures play nicely with Goldspan Dragon. We've also got Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa which is a flash dragon that can protect one of our bigger dragons in the event of a removal spell. I'm not sure if we're ever going to get to activate the ability but there's a chance!

The good news is midrange decks have a sweet new early drop in Reckoner Bankbuster. Dragons aren't known for their vehicle prowess but maybe it's time to see what it's like to have dragons piloting a mech suit! The card gives us the much-needed early play that can scale nicely into the mid-game as a threat.

Conclusion

Midrange hasn't existed for a minute in standard thanks to Divide by Zero and  Alrund's Epiphany but with the card being banned, midrange is back. The deck felt fun to play and can definitely hold its own against the Prismari decks but the deck does need more ways to fight the go wide strategies. So many of the sweepers kill our own dragons or don't pick off enough threats. I've thought about putting in Draconic Intervention but so often the card sits in my hand without a spell big enough to kill everything. Once we figure out how to combat the low to the ground strategies, the deck feels like it could really take flight.

Thanks for watching the content.
