Single Scoop: Esper Aphemia (Standard, Magic Arena)


For those that weren't there to watch during the early access event, I was piloting a pretty sweet Aphemia, the Cacophony deck that allows us to take the Esper Stacks deck and make it a little more aggressive!

Gameplan

Before Theros we saw a Doom Foretold deck do reasonably well but instead of being a bit more stacks/controlling, you could play a slightly more aggressive version.

Aphemia, the Cacophony is the perfect way to do that as we turn all of our dead enchantments into a 2/2 zombie. Its even better if we get to assemble the cute interaction of Divine Visitation and any token producer. Because of Aphemia and how much we end up eating up our graveyard, it does require us to cut out out Dance of the Manse but with blue still in the deck, we turn to another threat! Alela, Artful Provocateur did seem pretty weak in standard with only Korvold, Fae-Cursed King being the only standard playable brawler. I think there is a chance that Theros has loaded us up with a ton of Enchantments and Enchantment creatures which will trigger Alela and generate an army of blue faeries. It's not Bitterblossom but it allows me to try to play some sort of Faeries deck in standard again!

We got tons of new toys to play with this set and one of my personal favorites is Treacherous Blessing as it allows us to draw three cards and then potentially get a zombie later with Aphemia. It's also a wonderful target to sacrifice to Doom Foretold so we stop pinging ourselves. Another set of cards that have really surprised me are the Uncommon sagas. Medomai's Prophecy is a great way to set up our early turns and get value off of a spell we were already going to cast later. And of course, we also got Tymaret Calls the Dead which is another zombie generator and a way to fill our yard up for Aphemia. 

Conclusion

The deck got us into silver quite easily and I'm pretty happy about that but I also know there are holes in the deck especially since it's in best of one. Because of Bo1, I had to fill the deck with a ton of cards that would normally be in the sideboard and shave a few synergistic cards. I know for a fact that we could also use a slight boost on Enchantment count as I believe we're only at 19 if we count Aphemia. I know that it's normally great to have something like Golden Egg as easy and cheap sac fodder but it might be time to just cut those from the deck and go even heavier on enchantments. It'll look a little more like this ...

The deck definitely has wings (hehe Aphemia joke) and can take off with a bit more tuning but now that there's some groundwork, let's see what we can all come up with!
