Much Abrew: Golgari Doubling Season (Standard)

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Much Abrew About Nothing! One thing we've learned about Standard since the release of Avatar is that Badgermole Cub is really good at making lots of mana, but is it good enough to make Doubling Season and some old-school planeswalker reprints in Foundations like Vivien Reid and Liliana, Dreadhorde General good in Standard? That's what we're going to find out today!

Wrap Up

  • Record-wise, our deck did pretty well! We went 11-7 for a 61% win rate, which is very solid. If you actually break down the matchups, things get even more interesting. We played against the Simic Spew deck five times and only won once. Apparently we aren't the best Badgermole Cub deck in Standard, but even being a lesser Badgermole Cub deck is pretty powerful. If we exclude the Simic matches, we went 10-3 against the rest of the field, for a 77% win percentage.
  • The plan of the deck is super straightforward: use Badgermole Cub and mana dorks to ramp into Doubling Season and then one of our game-winning planeswalkers. With Doubling Season on the battlefield, we can ultimate Vivien Reid the turn we play it to give all of our creatures +2/+2, vigilance, trample, and indestructible, which should win us the game over the course of a few turns, or Liliana, Dreadhorde General, which makes our opponent sacrifice down to just one of each permanent type, including lands, which usually just wins the game on the spot.
  • Otherwise, we get some removal to help slow our opponent down and Esper Origins as a way to filter through our deck to find Doubling Season and our planeswalker finishers.
  • So should you play Golgari Doubling Season in Standard? If you like ultimating some big, old-school planeswalkers, I think the answer is yes! While the deck likely isn't top-tier, it did feel more than powerful enough to pick up a lot of wins, and posted a record to back that up! Just watch out for the Simic deck; that matchup is miserable.
